Lead Carpenter - Residential Remodeling & Carpentry
Tom Trese, Winston Salem, North Carolina, United States, 27104
We are hiring for a veteran-owned local business based in Winston-Salem, NC. Our client works across a range of residential projects, from rentals and flips to higher-end custom homes. Our main clientele is higher-end clients who expect expert craftsmanship, and that standard applies across every job we take on. We are looking for a skilled Lead Carpenter to join the team as a long-term employee.
About This Role This is a hands-on position. You will be expected to perform the work yourself, not manage a crew or delegate tasks. The majority of our jobs are completed by one person working independently. If you need a helper to get through a standard carpentry or drywall job, this role is not the right fit.
Responsibilities & Duties This role covers a wide range of residential carpentry and repair work. You must be skilled in all of the duties listed below. The core of this job is drywall, painting, decks, and flooring. Cabinet installation and remodeling work happen, but they are not the day-to-day.
Note: Drywall experience is required. This means the full process: cutting, installing, patching, mudding, sanding, and painting to a finished surface.
Day-to-day duties:
Drywall: cut, install, patch, mud, sand, and paint to a finished surface
Painting: interior residential painting to professional quality standards
Deck building and repair
Floor installation: luxury vinyl plank (LVP), hardwood, laminate, and tile
Trim carpentry: baseboards, door and window casing, crown molding
Door installation: hanging doors, adding fixtures, handles, locks, hinges, and hardware
Routine service ticket work, completed without needed supervision
Additional duties (less frequent):
Cabinet design and installation
Shelving and fitted furniture installation
Kitchen and bathroom remodeling
General carpentry repairs as assigned
Supervise a small team or helper when applicable to keep jobs on time and on budget
Skills & Qualifications Required:
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Lead or Master Carpenter
Full drywall experience: cutting, installing, patching, mudding, sanding, and painting
Hands-on experience with painting, deck building, and flooring installation
Excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction
Proficiency with power and hand tools: saws, routers, measuring instruments, and related equipment
Ability to work independently and complete jobs without constant supervision or a helper
Detail-oriented with the ability to produce quality work efficiently
Good verbal communication skills; fluent in English
Good physical condition and endurance
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation — required
Preferred:
Formal carpentry training, such as union apprenticeship, trade school, or similar structured program
Experience working in higher-end residential homes
Track record of completing jobs on time and within budget
This Position May Not Be the Right Fit If...
Your carpentry experience is primarily in apartments, rentals, or low-income housing.
You cannot perform the full drywall process from start to finish.
You typically need a helper or crew to complete standard jobs. The majority of our work is done solo.
You are coming from owning or running your own business and are looking for short-term employee work.
You tend to work at a very slow pace, even if the finished product is good. Jobs need to be completed in a reasonable timeframe.
