General Information The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department invites applicants for a Summer Camp Director position for the 2026 summer season. Training starts in May. The role runs June‑July, Monday‑Friday 1:00 pm–5:00 pm, 20–30 hours per week. The Director reports directly to the Recreation Manager and indirectly to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation. This position is open until filled.
Essential Job Functions
Coordinate the development, plan, and implementation of age‑appropriate activities.
Ensure safe and enjoyable play environments, enforce procedures and rules.
Assist the Recreation Coordinator in hiring and training camp staff.
Supervise a team of 6–10 camp counselors, lead staff meetings, and provide guidance.
Manage program budget and maintain required records (invoices, medical forms, incident reports, etc.).
Recognize, respond to emergencies, and report issues to the Recreation Coordinator.
Communicate daily with parents in a professional and courteous manner.
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Two or more years of experience teaching or leading children ages 5‑12.
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Leisure Services, or related field (preferred).
Leadership and supervisory experience (preferred).
Prior experience with the City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department (preferred).
Organized, dependable, and reliable; ability to work with children with disabilities and/or special needs.
Effective communication with youth, parents, and staff; confident and positive attitude.
Commitment to City of Ames Core Values and safety standards.
Professional appearance and demeanor required on site.
Selection Process The process includes evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and a criminal background check (sex offender registry). Candidates will be notified of status via email.
