Job Description & Requirements
As a Landscape Architectural Designer at Interstate Engineering, you’ll help transform ideas into buildable, impactful spaces. This role is ideal for a designer who enjoys both creative problem-solving and technical execution producing detailed plans and graphics while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to bring projects to life. With guidance from a Licensed Landscape Architect and the opportunity to manage appropriate landscape-led efforts, this position offers meaningful responsibility, growth, and influence throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
Support specific components of landscape architecture projects, from conceptual design through construction documentation, ensuring technical accuracy and design intent.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil engineers, architects, environmental consultants) to integrate landscape architectural design into broader project scopes.
Produce detailed site plans, planting plans, grading, and construction details with oversight using tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Prepare and refine presentation graphics, reports, and visualizations for client meetings, public presentations, and internal reviews.
Conduct site visits to document conditions, support construction administration, and resolve design issues during implementation.
Take a support role in product and material research, including recommending appropriate planting palettes, paving systems, site furnishings, and sustainable design strategies.
Assist with Proposals and Marketing Materials for Landscape Architectural Projects, assists multidisciplinary teams and Department Managers with integrated proposals.
Assist Landscape Architects and other professionals with QA/QC reviews, permitting processes, and coordination with regulatory agencies.
Begin managing workflows for junior staff and interns by delegating production tasks, reviewing work for quality, and providing technical mentorship.
Support project managers in tracking budgets, deliverables, and schedules.
Continue working toward licensure through participation in design critiques, professional development, and exposure to all phases of project work.
Qualifications:
LAAB-accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree in landscape architecture or related field.
2–5 years of experience in landscape architecture or related multidisciplinary office.
Advanced proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, GIS) and Microsoft Office.
Strong knowledge of landscape design principles, construction documentation, grading, drainage, sustainable practices, and regulatory requirements.
Excellent creativity, technical, and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple (5‑7) design projects and lead/support a team effectively.
Actively pursuing licensure through the Landscape Architecture Registration Exam (LARE).

Creative Skills: Ability to create innovative and functional landscape designs that meet aesthetic and sustainability goals.
Collaboration Skills: Effective coordination with planners, engineers, environmental specialists, and community engagement professionals to integrate diverse inputs.
Leadership Skills: Capability to manage projects and mentor junior staff with minimal supervision and problem solve when needed.
Project Management: Familiar with project management methods and software, with ability to quickly learn technologies used in the execution of projects.
Individual Development: This position is in alignment for licensure and is licensure tract; with gaining knowledge of standard of care required for profession.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in an office environment utilizing computer equipment and software.
May require frequent site visits, which involve walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.
Capable of lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds (e.g., design plans, site samples).
Comfortable working in various weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, and rain.
Adequate vision and hearing abilities to effectively assess site conditions and communicate with team members.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as necessary.
