Commercial Vehicle Inspection Specialist
$4,102.00 - $6,121.00 per Month

Job Description And Duties Inspects and tests integral commercial vehicle components and systems for compliance with the Vehicle Code and other applicable laws and regulations. At a minimum, ensures inspected vehicles meet or exceed the established Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) safety standards. Refers all identified violations to the on‑duty commercial officer for review and possible enforcement action. Issues and affixes CVSA decals to vehicles that pass inspection. Assists the commercial officer in a supporting role to provide security for the facility and reports suspected criminal activity or unusual occurrences. Reviews incoming commercial technical manuals and information bulletins. Prepares and conducts commercial training for departmental and allied agency personnel. Provides service to the public in person and via telephone regarding a wide variety of commercial vehicle operations—driver qualifications, hours of service, load securement, and mechanical questions. Monitors commercial vehicle driver qualification and compliance with state and federal laws. Sets up and maintains commercial regulation manuals, maintains facility resources, and issues inspection equipment. Performs other duties as assigned by facility supervisors to aid the facility in accomplishing the mission of the California Highway Patrol. Other job‑related duties within the scope of the classification.
Working Conditions The Carson Platform Scales operates five (5) days per week from 05:30 – 14:00 hours. CVISs assigned to the position work eight (8) hours per day on a work‑week schedule consistent with the provisions of the Bargaining Unit 12 contract.
Minimum Requirements The minimum qualifications are defined in the Class Specification for the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Specialist classification.
Desirable Qualifications Emotional control, tolerance for unpleasant working conditions (e.g., noise, exhaust fumes, confined spaces, extremes of temperature), attention to detail, and patience.
