Reporting to the Director of Analytics and Logistics, the Senior Business Analyst will provide analytical and logistical support to all departments within the MBTA's Engineering and Maintenance (E&M) department, which is responsible for maintaining the MBTA's track, power, and signals infrastructure. The Senior Business Analyst will drive analytics projects to improve efficiency and inform decision-making in E&M operations. Typical analytics projects leverage multiple data sources to iteratively build dashboards and digital tools. Tools may include daily notifications and alerts, informative reports, key performance metric dashboards, and predictive forecasting. The Senior Business Analyst will drive the full lifecycle of tool development from user research through design, implementation, launch, and continuous improvement. This position will also include data engineering work, ad hoc analysis, and other data-related projects. Additionally, this position will work cross-functionally with other MBTA departments, including Procurement and Logistics, Contract Administration, Budget, Asset Management, and Capital Programs.

Duties & Responsibilities Lead projects to understand operational problems and build analytical tools to help solve them. Structure short- and long-term projects and lead them from beginning to end to improve operational efficiency, inform policy, enhance safety, and reduce wasted time and materials. Maintain and expand on existing dashboards and digital tools used by Engineering and Maintenance. Analyze the performance of current business processes and work continuously to optimize them based upon external and internal feedback. Design performance metrics and the tools to calculate them, both for internal and third-party contractor performance. Assist in convening internal departments or third-party providers to review contracts or internal performance trends and discuss improvements Perform special studies and projects to understand the impact of specific policies, inform decisions on staffing, outsourcing, and purchasing, and generally optimize the use of available resources. Build analytical models to support "what-if" analysis Identify issues that require analyses, providing early notice of problem areas to department leadership Encourage the adoption of existing digital systems and newly deployed digital tools through hands-on training sessions Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker, in a courteous and professional manner This position will work primarily in an office environment with occasional trips into the field to inspect/observe projects or other infrastructure conditions, which may require visits to stations, the right of way, and other work sites. Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op.
