The MSL establishes proactive long-term scientific/strategic relationships with key healthcare providers, major medical associations, and academic centers of excellence to ensure access to relevant scientific information and to share pertinent information with the medical community. The MSL also provides technical and scientific field support, ensuring safe and effective use of Bayer products, including timely adverse event reporting and responses to unsolicited requests for detailed product and disease information. The MSL develops a complete understanding of national, regional, and local experts and stakeholders in specific therapeutic categories and collaborates with internal partners and external contacts to address scientific needs.
Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of this role, Lead Medical Science Liaison, Cardiorenal, are to:
Scientific Expertise
Depth of knowledge within the therapeutic area and business acumen that exceeds that of peers and/or Medical Affairs experience across multiple therapeutic areas.
Share expertise and lead projects, discussions, or training initiatives across Therapeutic Areas and USMA.
Coordinate and lead TA updates, team discussions, and training initiatives (e.g., journal clubs).
Identify educational gaps and provide recommendations for educational resources or initiatives.
Complete core training curriculum and basic MSL and Therapeutic Area (TA) Certification; demonstrate ongoing learning and recertification where applicable.
Maintain professional licensure with CEU documentation where applicable.
Attend and report on local, regional, and national medical conferences and meetings of value.
Coordinate team coverage of major regional or national meetings, including program evaluation, attendance, and high-quality meeting reports.
External HCP and Stakeholder Engagement
Coordinate National/Global TL engagement with senior management and key stakeholders.
Identify opportunities for potential organizational collaboration with Bayer.
Leverage Thought Leader relationships to create mutually beneficial opportunities across Bayer and with other TLs.
Establish robust long-term relationships with Thought Leaders and other stakeholders with up-to-date segmentation aligned with US, Global, and Area Business Unit strategies.
Proactive engagement with TLs, HCPs, research sites, associations, and societies according to defined plans; seek future stakeholders in alignment with local health care systems and medical strategy.
Advisory board or other Bayer program coordination, workshop leadership, and presentation.
Translate local medical plans into TL engagement strategies with cross-functional teams; identify synergies with Bayer interests and the medical community.
Strategically approach accounts and territory to ensure alignment with medical objectives using key metrics.
Support speaker training and medical evaluation of scientific merit.
Education
Deliver educational presentations to external audiences and proactively identify educational opportunities within the assigned Area Business Unit.
Provide timely, accurate, specific, and balanced responses to Medical Inquiries in collaboration with Medical Communications.
Adhere to SOPs and FDA guidance for distribution of scientific information; comply with guidelines for all external contacts.
Prepare and present data to internal audiences including MA and Commercial partners.
Research
Collaborate with Clinical Development and other stakeholders to support Bayer research programs in Field Medical.
Support research projects aligned with medical and brand strategy, including investigator-initiated research (IIR) and site identification.
Support Bayer-sponsored clinical trials, including data collection, feasibility and initiation visits, and study support as appropriate.
Insights
Propose strategic recommendations based on insight analysis.
Generate HCP and stakeholder insights to deepen understanding of patients, HCPs, consumers, or treatment landscape; document and communicate insights to inform tactics and strategy.
Collect, interpret, and communicate insights with recommendations to refine medical strategies and tactics.
Report new compound development information and potential collaborations as appropriate, in line with corporate strategy.
Collaboration
Mentor and coach MSLs across Therapeutic Areas or countries; initiate collaborative opportunities with cross-functional partners including US and Global.
Lead strategic project teams or task forces within USMA, Customer or Product teams, or Global teams.
Contribute to product development initiatives with Global Product Development and internal partners.
Maintain compliant strategic partnerships with territory cross-functional stakeholders as part of Area Business Unit teams.
Present to internal audiences including cross-TA, USMA, or Global teams and partners.
Contribute to or lead resource development and review; initiate best practice discussions for MSL teams and internal partners.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders as scientific resources for development of materials for internal and external use.
New Ways of Working (Data collection / analysis / interpretation)
Develop strategic perspective on Bayer’s commercial and go-to-market strategies and the healthcare landscape to anticipate needs and shape stakeholder plans.
Provide insights into evolving ways of working based on data and outcomes.
Champion new ways of working, train and empower Field Medical teams to use them.
Complete required customer activity documentation, training, expense reporting, and other administrative responsibilities in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner.
Review and interpret interaction analytics related to TL engagement and take appropriate actions to execute stakeholder plans.
Use data and analytics to maximize opportunities within the territory.
Leverage country and Global platforms to enable data-driven, tailored stakeholder engagement.
Use omnichannel engagement methods to ensure a customer-centric approach to data dissemination and education.
Who You Are Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree required.
Experience in a scientific or healthcare clinical setting, or pharmaceutical industry experience in Medical Affairs, Sales, Marketing, or Clinical Development; or post-graduate fellowship experience; rotations or fellowships do not contribute to requirements.
MSL experience required.
Demonstrated project management ability and ability to communicate scientific information effectively.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
Understanding of clinical trial design and ability to critically evaluate medical literature.
Ability to work in a team and build productive relationships internally and externally.
Travel 50%+ and ability to manage a demanding schedule.
Valid driver’s license and eligibility to drive a company car or pooled vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced terminal degree (e.g., M.D., PhD, PharmD, DPH, EdD) or advanced degree in Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing or equivalent.
Minimum 5 years in scientific or healthcare clinical setting or pharmaceutical industry experience in Medical Affairs, Sales, Marketing or Clinical Development.
Minimum 3 years MSL or liaison experience.
Working knowledge of FDA, OIG requirements.
Employees can expect a salary range of $156,000 to $234,000, with potential bonuses or commissions where applicable. Benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, and sick leave. The salary range is an estimate and may vary by location, experience, and qualifications.
