Job Description Summary

The Mechanical Designer II is responsible for designing, developing, and documenting mechanical equipment related to centralized heating, oil, gas, water, and steam systems. This includes piping layouts, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, boilers, and related infrastructure.

Essential Job Functions

1. Design & Drafting

Lead the development of detailed mechanical drawings and designs using CAD software.

Create 3D models and 2D drawings that adhere to industry standards and project specifications.

Collaborate with mechanical engineers to optimize designs for functionality, assembly, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness.

Implement design changes based on engineering feedback and project requirements.

Demonstrate advanced proficiency in CAD software, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools.

Select appropriate materials based on design requirements and constraints.

Verify system components and product materials conform to appropriate engineering and performance specifications.

2. Document & Reporting

Maintain organized documentation of mechanical designs, drawings, and project files.

Ensure that drawings are accurate and reflect project requirements.

Generate reports on design progress, milestones, and potential issues.

Communicate design updates to relevant team members and project stakeholders.

3. Communication & Collaborative Support

Work closely with mechanical engineers and project managers to understand project requirements.

Provide design support and contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration.

4. Quality Assurance

Ensure designs comply with industry standards, regulations, and company drafting guidelines.

Stay informed about the latest developments in design and drafting technologies, as well as client-specific drafting standards and general design specifications.

Implement and adhere to best practices to optimize design efficiency and accuracy.

5. Team Leadership

Provide support and expertise to junior designers and drafters.

Contribute to the improvement of design standards and processes.

Requirements Experience Required

3-5 years of experience in mechanical equipment design, piping system or pressure vessel design.

Proficiency in 3D CAD and P&ID software (AutoCAD Plant 3D, SolidWorks, etc.).

Working knowledge of ASME B31.1/B31.3 and pressure vessel design codes.

Education Required

Associate degree or technical school training in Computer Aided Design, or related field.

Certifications (Preferred)

Piping or Pressure Vessel Design Training (API 650, ASME B31.1, etc.)

Skills

Proficiency in 3D CAD software (AutoCAD Plant 3D, SolidWorks, Inventor, or Revit MEP).

Intermediate knowledge of ASME codes (B31.1, B31.3, Section VIII) and other mechanical design standards.

Excellent written and verbal communication

Excellent time management skills

Excellent attention-to-detail

Effective collaboration skills

Knowledge of basic engineering concepts.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Competencies

Project Coordination: Manages multiple design tasks and coordinates with cross-functional teams.

Independence: Works with minimal supervision while ensuring design quality.

Physical Requirements

Seeing: Must be able to see well enough to read reports.

Hearing: Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with customers, vendors and employees.

Standing/Walking: Must be able to move about department.

Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling: Must be able to stoop or kneel to pick up paper products or directories.

Lifting/Pulling/Pushing: Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Finger Mobility/Grasping/Feeling: Must be able to type and use technical sources.

Working Conditions Normal working conditions absent extreme factors.
