UMÉ Studio is an architecture and interiors practice rooted in craft, sensory experience, and wellness. Our work spans boutique hospitality, bathhouses, and commercial environments across California and Southeast Asia, with projects that emphasize highly crafted, transportive hospitality spaces.
We are a small, focused studio that values rigor, precision, and beautiful execution. Our project scopes include brand research, master planning, architecture, landscape, interiors, and custom material and furniture design.
Current projects include a winery renovation in Carmel currently in Construction Administration, a 26 room oceanfront boutique hotel in Pacific Grove, and a large-scale bathhouse in Lombok, Indonesia.
2. Role Summary We are seeking a design-driven and technically capable Interior Designer / Interior Architect to join our team full-time.
The ideal candidate brings a strong sensibility for materiality, spatial storytelling, and interior detailing, with experience across all project phases from Concept through Construction Administration. You will work closely with the Principal and project leads on hospitality and wellness projects, contributing to interior architecture, FF&E strategy, documentation, and site coordination.
This role requires both aesthetic rigor and technical fluency, with the ability to operate independently within a small, highly focused studio.
Position is remote-eligible; California project experience is required. Occasional travel for site visits and key meetings may be necessary.
3. Key Responsibilities Project Leadership Develop interior design concepts aligned with brand and architectural direction Produce mood boards, material studies, spatial narratives, and presentation decks Lead FF&E strategy including custom furniture, lighting, and material selection Develop interior architectural elements including millwork, built-ins, and finish transitions Coordinate consultants including structural, MEP, civil, and specialty trades Manage internal project timelines, deliverables, and drawing packages
Design & Technical Execution Production assets like drawing sets, details, and specifications that reflect design intent, design diagrams, project visuals like renders and collage Maintain a high level of precision across plans, sections, elevations, and details Produce interior drawing packages including plans, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, finish plans, schedules, and interior details Develop millwork and custom detailing that reflects design intent Coordinate finishes and specifications Support Revit, CAD, Rhino model development and documentation integration
Construction Administration Review submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings Support site visits and support construction problem-solving Ensure execution aligns with drawings, details, and design vision
Required Qualifications 5+ years of professional interior design or interior architecture experience (candidates up to 12 years encouraged; role scope and compensation scale accordingly) Bachelor or Masters in Architecture or Interiors Strong proficiency in Rhino, Enscape, AutoCAD, and Adobe Suite. Revit is a plus Experience with hospitality, wellness, residential, or boutique commercial projects Deep understanding of interior detailing, millwork, finish assemblies, and consultant coordination Experience producing CD sets for review Ability to work with furniture vendors to manage process and deliveries Strong visual communication and graphic sensibility Familiarity with project management, construction administration, budget review, building codes, consultant coordination, and client relations Experience working from concept design through to construction Familiarity with California codes and permitting Clear communicator with a calm, organized, and self-directed working style
