Position Summary:
The Assistant Superintendent serves as the senior level leader and primary driver for the District's academic and instructional performance. This critical second-in-command administrative role functions as an essential conduit between the Superintendent's high-level vision and the tactical execution of the academic and instructional aspects of that vision within and across all District schools and classrooms. By translating strategic goals into actionable academic frameworks and leading the implementation of those frameworks, the Assistant Superintendent ensures the District's educational mission as outlined in its Strategic Plan is realized with consistency and fidelity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership and Communication
Provide District leadership in the Superintendent’s absence, serving as designated signatory.
Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet.
Assist the Superintendent in collective bargaining and representation of the School Board and administration in complaint and grievance hearings/labor disputes and collective bargaining negotiations in partnership with other relevant members of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet.
Assist the Superintendent in addressing parent/guardian and community inquiries and concerns.
Represent the District at local and regional meetings of the intermediate unit.
Actively participate in School Board public, committee and ad hoc meetings.
Administrative Supervision
Provide leadership and supervision to the Office of Education and its directors and staff.
Provide leadership to the building principals, monitoring attendance for principals, assistant principals and vice principals.
Strategic Planning
Facilitate the District’s strategic planning implementation, providing leadership in short-range and long-range planning under the direction of and in partnership with the Superintendent.
Provide leadership in policy analysis and development in partnership with other relevant members of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet.
Through the Office of Education and in partnership with other relevant members of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet, coordinate enrollment data, enrollment projections, class sizes and space/staffing needs.
Operational Management
In partnership with the Superintendent and Director of Business, coordinate annual budget planning and preparation process.
In partnership with the Director of Business and Director of Human Resources, develop a professional staffing and budgeting plan to address projected staffing needs for the upcoming school year.
Led by the Director of Human Resources, participate in the recruitment and selection of highly qualified professional and administrative staff.
In partnership with the Director of Business Services, authorize co-curricular contracts and payments.
In partnership with the Superintendent, Director of Business, and other members of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet, monitor District compliance with federal and state statutes, School Board policies and labor contracts.
In partnership with other relevant members of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet, coordinate the administration of federal programs.
Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development
Provide leadership over the instructional program with the principals and department chairs.
Provide leadership over the instructional staff professional development and induction and mentoring programs.
Monitor, manage and approve requests to attend professional meetings and professional conferences for teachers and administrators.
Through the Office of Education and its Directors, supervise the co-curricular program budget, review co-curricular programs and recommend changes.
*Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.
Qualifications:
PA Letter of Eligibility for Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent.
Master’s in Education, Educational Leadership, School Administration, or related concentration required, Doctorate degree preferred.
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a K-12 educational leader (school principal or central office academic-area supervisor) required.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills required.
Strong knowledge of federal and PA state academic standards and their application in a district and its schools and classrooms required.
Strong focus on academic achievement with ability to drive progress through interpretation, analysis, and application of student and school performance data for continuous improvement required.
Ability to effectively multitask, problem solve, make independent judgments, and respond to sensitive inquiries and issues required.
Experience working in a unionized/collective bargaining environment required.
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology, including student and school data systems, required.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Current Act 34, Act 151 and FBI clearances. Satisfactory pre-employment physical.

Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and to talk, hear, taste and smell
Sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; and occasionally be required to stoop, kneel and crouch
Have specific vision abilities to include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus

Must be able to function at a high level and must possess the judgement and maturity required for making decisions that affect large numbers or staff. The nature of the job requires dealing with sensitive information and strict standards of confidentiality must be adhered to; and
May be required to work under stressful conditions when dealing with difficult issues and when participating in staffing matters and budgetary proceedings.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Terms: 12 months, 260 days
