Position Summary
The Temp-to-Hire Director of Development plays a critical execution and leadership role in advancing Umoja Community Education Foundation’s (UCEF) Strategic Plan Goal 5: Diversify Revenue. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), this role is responsible for operationalizing UCEF’s multi-channel fundraising strategy, managing day-to-day development operations, and directly supporting revenue growth across individual giving, corporate sponsorships, foundations, alumni giving, events, and emerging revenue streams.
This position is designed to stabilize and scale UCEF’s fundraising infrastructure while the organization continues to expand nationally and internationally. The Director of Development will translate strategy into action—building systems, managing pipelines, supervising vendors and consultants, and ensuring disciplined execution aligned with UCEF’s equity-centered mission.
Strategic Alignment: UCEF Goal 5 – Diversify Revenue
Expand and diversify philanthropic revenue across individual, corporate, foundation, alumni, and event-based giving
Increase unrestricted and multi-year funding
Build sustainable fundraising infrastructure, systems, and workflows
Strengthen donor stewardship, reporting, and relationship management
Support board and executive leadership in fundraising accountability
Key Responsibilities Fundraising Operations & Execution
Execute the annual development plan in partnership with the CDO, translating strategy into weekly and monthly work plans
Manage fundraising operations across campaigns including Giving Tuesday & Year-End Giving, UmojaCon (Annual Conference) fundraising, VIP receptions, and silent auctions, Alumni Association Giving Campaigns, International Student Fellowship Program (ISFP), Major Gifts and Monthly Giving programs
Ensure timely execution of donor outreach, acknowledgments, stewardship, and reporting
Revenue Pipeline & Prospect Management
Manage and maintain an active donor and prospect pipeline in Salesforce
Oversee prospect research, qualification, assignment, and movement through cultivation stages
Partner with the CDO and CEO on major gift strategy, donor meetings, and follow-up
Track revenue projections, solicitation goals, and close rates
Systems, Data & Accountability
Ensure accurate and consistent use of Salesforce for donor records, opportunities, tasks, and reporting
Maintain development dashboards, KPIs, and board-ready fundraising snapshots
Support data integrity, campaign tracking, and reporting deadlines
Coordinate with communications and finance to ensure alignment between fundraising, messaging, and financial reporting
Corporate, Foundation & Institutional Giving Support
Support corporate sponsorship development, including sponsorship menus, proposals, and stewardship deliverables
Coordinate grant calendars, submission timelines, and reporting requirements in partnership with consultants and leadership
Track restricted funding requirements and donor deliverables
Board & Volunteer Fundraising Enablement
Support the Board Fundraising Committee with meeting preparation, metrics, and action tracking
Provide tools, scripts, and support for board member fundraising participation
Help manage advisory councils, alumni leaders, and fundraising ambassadors
Supervision & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Supervise development staff, contractors, and consultants as assigned
Collaborate closely with the Director of Communications to align fundraising campaigns with marketing and storytelling
Coordinate with regional and program leaders to surface funding opportunities and impact stories
Success Metrics (First 6 Months)
Demonstrated progress toward diversified revenue targets
Fully operational fundraising calendar and campaign workflows
Clean, accurate Salesforce pipeline with active movement of prospects
Timely donor acknowledgments and stewardship processes in place
Board and executive leadership report confidence in development operations
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
7–10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development or advancement
Demonstrated success in multi-channel fundraising (individual, corporate, events, foundations)
Strong experience with CRM systems (Salesforce preferred)
Proven ability to manage multiple campaigns and deadlines simultaneously
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in higher education, community colleges, or education-focused nonprofits
Familiarity with donor-advised funds, corporate philanthropy, and national foundations
Experience supporting board-led fundraising
Comfort working in a fast-growing, evolving organization
