Position Overview
The Student Union, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary The Director, Programs, Marketing and Assessment is responsible for creating seamless integration of marketing efforts for the department, programs and events for the campus community, and managing assessment efforts for campus programs, events, and larger department initiatives.
Student Union, Inc. marketing is responsible for digital and print media for department needs with a focus on both campus programming and operational and other department support. Campus programming areas support academic year and summer orientation programs for a diverse and broad campus stakeholder community – combining educational programs with connection‑building activities. This role will also ensure effective collaborations and partnerships with other campus programming entities to reduce overlap and enhance student participation. Assessment efforts involve qualitative and quantitative methods to examine, refine, and help direct our campus efforts in alignment with data.
The position reports to and receives general supervision and direction from the Executive Director.
Essential Functions and Tasks Marketing
Ability to direct department goals and objectives, facilitate innovation and set standards for marketing in print and digital media within the department.
Supervise full‑time marketing Assistant Director and provide oversight of other full‑time and student staff; examine staffing levels and roles for adequacy in meeting changing department needs; set and maintain standards for internal/external client turnaround for marketing requests.
Evaluate and approve expenses and fiscal year budgets for the department.
Ensure software systems and technology needs are sufficient to meet department requirements.
Develops and maintains relationships with SJSU University Marketing & Communications; ensures compliance with standards related to altered design for people with disabilities; supports overall broader campus marketing efforts.
Other responsibilities in this area as designated or assigned.
Programs and Events
Ability to direct department goals and objectives, facilitate innovation and change in new and existing programs to meet the needs of Student Union mission, campus culture, and foster student engagement.
Oversee multiple and complex Student Union events and programs including comedy, annual SpartanFest and other concerts, performing arts, multicultural programs, movie nights, and other special events.
In conjunction with area leadership, develop and maintain the annual budget for the department, including preliminary event expense budget and end‑of‑event settlements.
Responsible for the training, supervision and evaluation of an Assistant Director for Programs, and oversight of two additional full‑time program and event Coordinators and SU event and information center student assistants. Oversight of employee training, scheduling, payroll, supervision of work performance.
Develops and sustains strategic partnerships and collaborations with other departments in the division, as well as academics, athletics, alumni and parent programs, and operations and planning (Greek Organizations, Associated Students, Residence Hall Council, and Student Involvement) to reduce overlap, ensure cooperation and model efficiency in campus programming.
Serves on SJSU campus‑wide committees related to campus programming; assists with Division‑wide efforts for program collaboration and ensuring scheduling aligns with Event Services and SJSU requests for priority dates.
Works with the Associate Executive Director on risk management and emergency procedures, safety practices and risk management procedures and ensure all activities are conducted in accordance to Student Union, SJSU and CSU risk management policies for programs and events.
Assessment
Oversee the ongoing evaluation of all event programs, including completing participant evaluations, focus groups, informal discussion, and written program surveys for a learning outcome, and value to the student or campus community.
Works with SUI Student Success and Assessment team to ensure learning outcomes are developed and assessed consistently with Division and SJSU outcomes and goals.
Supervise, train, and oversee a graduate assistant for Assessment.
Work with the graduate assistant to further develop calendar of department assessments; tools for benchmarking; and share valuable information and data to department stakeholders.
Other Areas
Conduct individual and group 1:1 and team meetings as appropriate; ensure effective collaboration, communication and planning between programs, marketing, and assessment areas.
In conjunction with areas conduct mid‑ and long‑term planning for the departments to ensure matching future departmental needs and student trends.
As a part of the department executive leadership team, engage in broad conversations, projects, and efforts that support Student Union, Inc. at large.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as an indoor facility and outdoor aquatic program‑oriented environment.
