
Writer/Digital Content Specialist (P3)
Location: Columbia, Richland County, SC
Division: Division of Marketing, MKTG Integrated Outreach
Job Summary: The University of South Carolina’s Division of Marketing is seeking a Writer/Digital Content Specialist to contribute to owned content, maintain email marketing best practices, write articles for USC Today faculty/staff email, and coordinate a vibrant content calendar while ensuring consistent branding.
Responsibilities
Write stories for university digital outlets and print publications (e.g., USC Today, alumni & faculty/staff newsletters, magazine).
Establish and maintain email newsletter guidelines, produce Wednesday edition, proofread M‑W‑Fri editions.
Manage Basecamp content planning, moving content through planning stages.
Approve and manage web story entry into CMS, ensuring photo usage, SEO, style guidelines and tagging.
Manage Inside Carolina alumni newsletter; layout 3 segmented editions, handle image sizing, promote video, coordinate distribution.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, journalism, English, or related field.
3+ years of related experience (or equivalent), including 5+ years creating online communications.
Strong writing, editing, verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with CMS, email marketing tools, social media platforms.
Project management experience, ability to handle multiple deadlines.
Problem‑solving skills and alignment with brand standards and audience needs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills.
Understanding of digital publishing (web, email, social media).
Planning, time‑management, interpersonal skills.
Rapid‑response, team‑oriented work environment.
Professional development mindset, staying current with communication trends.
Ability to edit for style, clarity, brand standards and proofread accurately.
Higher education experience preferred.
Writing for print, web, social media, video; rewriting text from other sources.
Required Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3+ years of job‑related experience (or equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and experience).
