Galveston County Health District is seeking a dedicated and community-focused Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) to help safeguard the residents of Galveston, Brazoria, and Chambers counties from sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. In this role, you will provide prevention counseling, condom distribution, HIV/Syphilis testing, partner services, and case management to at-risk populations in office, clinic, and field settings.

What You’ll Do:
Perform office, clinic, and field investigations for sexually transmitted diseases, including partner notification and needle-sharing investigations
Provide HIV/Syphilis testing, prevention counseling, and condom distribution to at-risk populations
Conduct venipuncture in the field, private homes, clinics, and office settings
Initiate investigations within one working day of assignment
Input case data into EMR and State database systems
Provide Syphilis/HIV case management in accordance with Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) guidelines
Maintain DIS standards according to DSHS Program Operating Procedure Standards (POPS)
Ensure all patient intake and consent forms are completed and properly filed
Maintain ongoing case management until all partners are appropriately dispositioned
Maintain frequent contact with patients, healthcare providers, and community organizations
Coordinate with Public Health Nurses and medical providers to ensure timely and appropriate client services
Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive health information
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
What We’re Looking For:
Bachelor’s or Associate degree from an accredited college or university preferred (relevant experience may substitute for education)
Minimum of six (6) months of experience in HIV/STD-related field preferred
Current Certificate of Completion of Foundations of Counseling and Testing Course from DSHS preferred
Must complete Foundations of Counseling and Testing Course within first three (3) months of employment
Successful completion of the FSTDI STD course within six (6) months of employment
Phlebotomy experience preferred or ability to complete venipuncture training within six (6) months of employment
Knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS infection
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations while maintaining strict confidentiality
Bilingual in Spanish highly preferred
Ability to obtain CPR certification within six (6) months of employment
Customer-service oriented with strong interpersonal skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office
Ability for spur-of-the-moment transportation without relying on organization vehicles
Valid Texas driver’s license; Department of Motor Vehicle check required
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
Must comply with GCHD Immunization Policy andICS training requirements
Must pass a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening
Equivalent education and experience may be considered
