About the Role We are seeking a Design Technologist / Metrology Engineer to build and evaluate AR optical prototypes from the ground up. This role combines AR application development (Unity/Unreal), hardware prototyping, optical measurement, and data analysis to validate next‑generation display systems. You will work hands‑on with AR devices, assemble optical prototypes, conduct rigorous display characterization, and develop software tools to support benchmarking and user studies. This is a hybrid engineering role at the intersection of AR software, optical systems, and data‑driven validation.
What You’ll Do AR Software Development:
Develop AR applications using Unity or Unreal Engine for prototype testing and user studies
Build custom image viewer applications for benchmarking third‑party AR devices
Develop scripts and tools in MATLAB, Python, C#, or C++
Troubleshoot hardware/software integration issues
Build automated testing and calibration tools
Prototyping & Fabrication:
Assemble AR optical prototypes using optics, displays, and sensors
Design and fabricate custom fixtures using CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, OnShape)
Utilize rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing – FDM/SLA)
Optical Metrology:
Conduct display characterization (luminance, color accuracy, MTF, distortion, field of view)
Calibrate and maintain lab instruments (photometers, colorimeters, spectrometers, optical benches)
Document measurement methodology with strong focus on repeatability and accuracy
Data & Analysis:
Design data storage systems (SQL/NoSQL)
Build data pipelines for measurement and study data
Develop analysis scripts (Python, MATLAB, R)
Create dashboards and visualizations for stakeholder review
What You’ll Bring Must‑Have Qualifications:
2+ years of hands‑on experience building AR/VR systems or prototypes
Experience developing AR applications in Unity or Unreal Engine
Experience with optical metrology and display characterization
Programming experience (Python, MATLAB, C#, or C++)
Experience assembling hardware prototypes
Strong documentation and communication skills
Preferred:
Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, HCI, or related field
Experience conducting AR user studies
Familiarity with human‑subject research environments
