Description The State Highway Administration (SHA) is recruiting for a Skilled Trade Specialist I. This open-qualified position will be used to fill a vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification.

Nature of Work This position serves as SHA’s Skilled Trade Technician I for the Facility Maintenance Division at the Headquarters complex, consisting of two connecting buildings, totaling 12 floors and approximately 236,000 square feet. Responsibilities include routine and emergency maintenance operations and troubleshooting in areas such as electrical (breaker panel, receptacles, light fixtures), plumbing (flushometers, faucets, toilet back-ups, floor and sink drains), and HVAC (Package Terminal Air Conditioners, rooftop and window units). The role also involves coordinating activities with contractors, consultants, and SHA divisions and districts.

Qualifications Education:

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:

Two years of experience performing skilled trade work in one of the following areas: plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding, depending on the essential job functions performed by the specific position.

Notes

Additional work experience performing skilled trades may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

A certificate from a vocational-technical school with a major in one or more skilled trades may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the skilled trades as defined above, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

Motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland; all applicants must list license number and expiration date on the application.

During the probationary period, employees may be required to obtain and maintain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in Maryland, depending on equipment operated.

Employees at the Maryland Aviation Administration may be required to have an Airfield Operators Permit prior to permanent appointment.

The employing administration may require completion of agency training and certification programs to obtain and maintain permanent status.

Special Requirements

Extensive pre-employment security background check for work at the Maryland Aviation Administration (FAA requirements).

Employees must be willing and available for duty at hours required to maintain continuous facility operation; familiarity with emergency call-back requirements is expected.

Exposure to hazardous materials may require medical testing and protective equipment training; respirator use may be required.

Ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters may be needed.

Pre-employment drug testing and ongoing substance abuse testing may be required.

Employees in this classification are considered "Essential Employees" and must sign policies related to Essential Employee status.
