Recruitment The State Highway Administration (SHA) is recruiting for a Skilled Trade Specialist I in Baltimore City. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification.
Nature of Work / Responsibilities This position serves as SHA's Skilled Trade Technician I for the Facility Maintenance Division at the Headquarters complex, consisting of two connected buildings, totaling 12 floors approximately 236,000 square feet. Responsibilities include routine and emergency maintenance operations and troubleshooting in areas of electrical (breaker panel, receptacles, light fixtures), plumbing (flushometers, faucets, toilet back‑ups, floor and sink drains), and HVAC (Package Terminal Air Conditioners, rooftop and window units). The role also requires coordinating activities with contractors, consultants and other divisions and districts in SHA's systems.

Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Two years of experience performing skilled trade work in one of the following areas: plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding, depending on the essential job functions performed by the specific position.
Additional notes:
Additional work experience performing skilled trades may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
A certificate from a vocational technical school with a major in one or more of the skilled trades may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in utilities repair or construction and engineering specialty codes in the skilled trades on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Licenses & Certifications
All applicants must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland, listing license number and expiration date.
During probation, employees may be required to obtain and maintain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in Maryland.
Employees at the Maryland Aviation Administration must obtain an Airfield Operators Permit per the Code of Maryland Regulations.
Employees may be required to meet agency training and certification program requirements to maintain permanent status.
Additional Information / Special Requirements
Applicants for work at the Maryland Aviation Administration are subject to an extensive pre‑employment security background check per FAA Part 107.
Employees must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as required, and maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call‑back.
Employees exposed to hazardous materials (asbestos, lead‑based paint, chromium) may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and hazardous materials training and wear a respirator.
Applicants may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance work on high structures and in cramped quarters.
Applicants will be subject to pre‑employment drug testing per the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11.
Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing per the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11.
Employees are considered “Essential Employees” and must sign policies related to “Essential Employee” status.
