General Summary

The Program Director is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and general administration of the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program. The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program. The Program Director is expected to integrate the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program with physician practice and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality, and that promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education.

Responsibilities

  • Dedicate at least 8 hours per week (.2 FTE) of professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the Hematology/Medical Oncology educational program and receive institutional support for this time.
  • Be responsible for monitoring fellow stress, including mental or emotional conditions inhibiting performance or learning, and drug- or alcohol-related dysfunction.
    • Be sensitive to the need for timely provision of confidential counseling and psychological support services to fellows.
    • Situations that demand excessive service or that consistently produce undesirable stress on fellows must be evaluated and modified.
  • Oversee development of an effective fellow advising program.
  • Have supervisory authority over all educational tracks at the primary site and at all participating sites for the Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship Program.
  • Participate in academic societies and in educational programs designed to enhance his or her educational and administrative skills.
  • Monitor fellow supervision at all participating sites to ensure the fellowship does not place excessive reliance on fellows for service as opposed to education.
    • Assist in assigning clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training.
    • Ensure proper supervision in clinical assignments.
    • Provide safe and effective patient care.
    • Develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements.
  • Recruit and select candidates for the fellowship program through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Medical Subspecialties Match unless otherwise approved.
  • Submit reports on program, faculty, and fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested.
  • Ensure implementation of policies and procedures consistent with institutional and program requirements, including supervision, work hours, working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, in compliance with ACGME Institutional Requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of accreditation and operational requirements, monitor trends and anticipate changes.
  • Obtain approval of the DIO before submitting information or requests to the ACGME for:
    • All applications for ACGME accreditation of new programs.
    • The addition or deletion of a participating institution.
    • A change in the structure, length, or format of the educational program.
    • A change in the approved fellow complement.
    • Progress reports requested by the Review Committee.
    • Responses to all proposed adverse actions.
    • Requests for increase or any change to fellow work hours.
    • Voluntary withdrawals of ACGME accredited programs.
    • Requests for appeal of an adverse action.
  • Approve a local director at each participating site who is accountable for fellow education.
  • Organize the faculty to deliver a consistently high-quality education program.
  • Evaluate the performance of faculty in meeting program objectives, including fellow satisfaction.
  • Develop and implement programs to enhance faculty knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills.
  • Assure that faculty meets research and scholarly activity requirements, actively participating in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences.
  • Ensure preparation and implementation of the Hematology/Medical Oncology fellowship curriculum to meet ACGME and ABIM requirements.
  • Establish clinical assignments and schedules of the fellows to achieve educational objectives; schedules should be established for the whole academic year by June 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1.
  • Evaluate fellow performance relative to educational objectives and ACGME milestones.
  • Establish and maintain a Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with AGME requirements and maintain documentation.
  • Appoint a Program Evaluation Committee whose responsibilities include a formal systematic evaluation of the curriculum at least annually with a written annual program evaluation.
  • Make decisions to promote fellows to next level of training and to graduate fellows upon completion; document completion and qualifications as required by ABIM; provide verification of fellowship education for all fellows.
  • Work with the DIO and hospital administration to assure effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible operation of the program; articulate a clear operational plan and advocate for resources, faculty, facilities, educational services or materials, and finances.
  • Participate on the Graduate Medical Education Committee and other hospital committees as requested by the Designated Institutional Official.
  • All other duties as assigned within scope and range of position.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience

  • Education: Doctor of Medicine.
  • Fellowship/Residency trained in Hematology-Oncology.
  • Credential(s): Medical Practice License.
  • Experience: Must have administrative experience and at least three years of participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency or hematology or medical oncology fellowship.

Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience

  • Prior experience in physician leadership or administrative/executive role within a multidisciplinary cancer program.
