Brief Summary of Job Duties
As Director, lead the campus-wide effort to engage and succeed Black students, oversee advisory groups, interface with senior campus leaders, and manage the department’s strategic planning, assessment, budgeting, and service delivery. Build partnerships, advance research, and contribute to campus climate and inclusion initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree
- 4–6 years of professional experience in higher education
- Experience writing grants, producing reports, and leading key initiatives
- Experience working with Black students and the broader Black community in a university setting
- Supervision experience, including conflict management and team development
- Awareness and membership in national organizations supporting Black students or diaspora
- Experience developing programming tailored to Black student needs
- Advanced knowledge of student development theories and Black student retention issues
- Expertise in higher education administration, policies, and Student Affairs practice
- Proficiency in evidence‑based methodologies to enhance curricular and co‑curricular success
- Knowledge of establishing objectives and rigorously assessing outcomes
- Excellent interpersonal, advocacy, and communication skills
- Ability to navigate complex political situations within campus culture
- Advanced understanding of anti‑discrimination policies and procedures
- High confidentiality, sensitivity, and professionalism in complex situations
- Initiative, problem‑solving, diplomacy, accountability, and professional judgment
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities
- Familiarity with University standards, UC policies, and business processes
Preferred Qualifications
- Preferred PhD
- Experience with shared governance (committee work, community/state/national involvement)

Job Functions and Percentages of Time
35% Leadership
- Lead OBSD’s vision, strategic plan, and organizational model for Black and underserved student success.
- Develop assessment and evaluation plans for all initiatives, using culturally informed, evidence‑based decision‑making.
- Collaborate with campus partners to address intersectionality and promote inclusive climate.
- Advise campus leadership on policies, data analysis, and direct services to support inclusion and retention.
- Establish partnerships and program models that address barriers and mobilize incentives for academic success.
- Participate in campus diversity and advocacy to improve climate and community cohesion, including the Anti‑Discrimination Policy.
- Manage the department’s budget and development efforts in collaboration with Student Affairs Grants and Development.
- Oversee daily operations and ensure departmental staff selection incorporates student advisory input.
15% Strategic Partnerships
- Engage faculty and staff as champions for diverse student learning, inclusion, and success.
- Lead Black Resource Committee (BRC), setting vision and sustaining initiatives.
- Maintain and develop new campus partnerships with EOP, Cultural Resource Center, Office of Culture and Inclusive Excellence, and more.
- Serve as expert advisor to faculty and campus leadership on practice impact and barriers.
- Work with academic departments, research centers, and colleges to identify barriers and implement interventions.
- Build relationships with key partners such as Black Student Union, Centers for Black Studies, CAPS, and student organizations.
40% Management
- Oversee daily operations and budget for staffing and programming.
- Secure external funding and work with the Student Affairs Development Office on grants and development.
- Ensure financial accountability, internal controls, and compliance with policies.
- Recruit, screen, select, and train staff, using student advisory input and setting performance expectations.
- Build staff capacity and provide professional development on crisis intervention, bias, and student support.
- Maintain relationships with students, faculty, and partners to enhance holistic services.
10% Student Services
- Create programs that use strength‑based and cultural wealth models for all students.
- Develop counseling/advising protocols for holistic support, research skills, graduate education, and financial literacy.
- Coordinate referrals with CAPS, Student Health, and other campus resources.
- Collaborate with campus entities to ensure wellbeing services for undergraduates, graduates, and marginalized communities.
- Oversee case management for complex student situations and coordinate with partners.
- Build relationships with Black students and families through admissions outreach and support.
