JOB DESCRIPTION

Tax Managing Director, SALT - Sales & Use Tax is responsible for advising clients on sales & use tax implications related to their business objectives, evaluating alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognizing potential tax risks, and identifying changes in sales & use tax statutes, policies, and regulations. The role includes marketing, networking, business development, and maintaining key client relationships. It also plays a critical part in the regional Tax Services leadership team, providing guidance on complex tax questions.

Job Duties

  • Research
    • Identifies complex sales & use tax situations, outlines issues, and determines appropriate research sources.
    • Analyzes researched facts and composes detailed reports or taxability matrices.
    • Develops relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax/Revenue personnel.
  • Tax Compliance
    • Conducts detailed reviews of sales & use tax returns and identifies significant issues.
    • Evaluates company compliance processes and provides customized automated solutions.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Drafts tax memorandums, opinions, and related documentation.
    • Reviews client operations to determine states for tax return filing.
    • Ensures proper resale and exemption certificates are maintained and develops retention procedures.
    • Applies applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and consults with other professionals.
    • Manages engagement letters and client expectations.
    • Assists in developing consultative tax strategies.
  • Tax Controversy
    • Drafts responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
    • Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues.
    • Provides assistance with exam support.
  • Tax Related Software
    • Utilizes sales & use tax research databases and related software.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Provides technical client service to multi‑state companies.
    • Negotiates settlements and voluntary disclosure agreements.
    • Drafts technical memoranda on sales & use tax issues.
  • ASC 450/FAS 5
    • Applies industry standards and firm policies to sales & use tax contingencies.
  • Strategy Development
    • Reviews studies to identify alternative actions benefiting clients.
    • Develops new ideas to advance client positions through tax reduction or non‑tax benefits.
    • Researches potential tax strategies and suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Other Duties as Required

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises daily workload of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and interns; reviews work product.
  • Ensures staff are trained on relevant tax software.
  • Evaluates performance and assists in goal development to enhance professional growth.
  • Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes evaluations.
  • Serves as Career Advisor for staff as appropriate.
  • Other duties as required.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 10+ years of state and local/multistate tax experience.
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals.
  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions (preferred).
  • Significant business development and marketing experience (required).

License/Certifications

  • CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.

Software

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools.

Compensation

Individual salaries are determined after consideration of qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

  • National Range: $157,500 - $420,000
  • Maryland Range: $157,500 - $420,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $157,500 - $420,000
  • Washington DC Range: $157,500 - $420,000
