Customs Compliance Specialist

Summary The Import-Export Specialist is responsible for managing and overseeing international shipments and customs compliance to ensure timely and cost-effective import and export operations. Will be a key liaison among internal teams, custom brokers, customers, Japan, and other stakeholders to streamline import/export clearance. This role involves coordinating with freight forwarders, ensuring documentation accuracy, and adhering to global trade regulations for all MMUSA divisions. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Supervise daily import and export operations including shipment planning, tracking, and delivery. Use trade compliance experience to review import entries for accuracy of classification, valuation, country of origin, and free trade agreements. Ensure compliance with international trade laws, regulations, and customs requirements. Review trade documentation and data to identify compliance risks, develop appropriate controls, mitigate emerging tariffs, and ensure integrity of the classification database. Oversee the day-to-day administrative duties of the import/export process: including preparation and accuracy of all required shipping and customs documentation (e.g., invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, bills of lading). Liaise with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and logistics providers to ensure timely clearance and delivery of goods. Collaborate with Division GMs to understand business needs and streamline freight companies/brokers to leverage better rates. Consolidate broker companies to benefit overall freight costs for MMUSA. Coordinate with internal departments (procurement, sales, warehouse, finance) to ensure smooth international transactions. Monitor and manage import/export costs, tariffs, and duties to optimize costs. Maintain records and audit trails for all international transactions. Stay updated on changes in customs regulations, trade agreements, and global logistics trends. Identify and resolve any issues related to shipping delays, damages, or regulatory non-compliance. Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, International Business, Logistics, or related field. 35 years of experience in import/export operations, international trade or logistics with multinational companies. Strong knowledge of Incoterms, customs regulations, and import/export documentation. Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or similar), trade compliance and shipping software. Strong experience in classifying goods according to the HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) Other Skills And Abilities Attention to Detail:
