About the synod

Arkansas‑Oklahoma Synod | ELCA | Tulsa

The Arkansas‑Oklahoma Synod is made up of 41 congregations between the two states and is one of 65 synods, or regional bodies, that make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). The Arkansas‑Oklahoma Synod exists to connect these congregations with the greater church, be that other congregations in the area, the denomination as a whole or through international relationships. The A‑OK Synod also works to connect congregations and leaders to ecumenical and interfaith partners to do God’s work in this world.

While it is a small synod it is also scrappy, often willing to try new ideas and talk about topics that others might considered taboo or sensitive. The Synod has been a Reconciling in Christ Synod since 2023 and has below the national average of RIC congregations.

Congregations in the synod are small and large, urban, suburban and rural, clergy and lay led. Overall, the rostered ministers of the Synod feel a call not just to the congregations they serve but to the larger church and support neighboring congregations by providing sermons, on‑line learning opportunities, and other means.

A‑OK Synod Mission: To help congregations build and support communities seeking wholeness, through healing, forgiveness, and justice for all God’s creation, trusting in the Holy Spirit to lead and direct us.
