Job Overview Serving as a key member of the North America Tax Department (FF/N), this role is responsible for state and local income and franchise tax strategy, compliance, controversy management, and financial reporting across the U.S. and applicable local jurisdictions. The position ensures the timely and accurate completion of all required state and local tax filings, estimated payments, provision calculations, and audit responses.
Additional responsibilities include leading state tax planning initiatives, identifying and assessing state tax risks and opportunities, and advising business stakeholders on the state and local tax implications of operational changes, legislative developments, and corporate transactions. The role serves as a primary liaison with state taxing authorities, external advisors, and internal business partners to ensure consistent, accurate, and compliant outcomes across all State and Local Tax (SALT) matters.
State and Local Tax Director
Ensure that all legally required state and local income/franchise tax compliance responsibilities are adhered to for MBNAC & Subsidiaries. In conjunction with Tax NAFTA team this includes responsibility for ensuring that all required (income and non-income) tax returns are filed on an accurate and timely basis and certifying that all ICs compliance related requirements and activities have been met.
Lead the state and local tax audit and appeals processes for MBNAC & subsidiaries, ensuring full compliance with all applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
Provide state tax guidance, planning and analysis aligned with the overall tax strategy of the NAFTA Tax team and Mercedes-Benz Group AG. This includes direct communication with the various NAFTA business groups to provide support for the tax‑efficient generation of new business or changes in the business structure. Advise and assist with state and local tax planning and special projects.
Identify and implement opportunities to create tax efficiencies for MBNAC & Subsidiaries. This includes ensuring that all tax‑oriented transactions are evaluated within the Tax NAFTA team, thereby ensuring consistency in filing positions and the application of best practices.
Collaborate with EA to evaluate and pursue state tax incentive opportunities. Oversee compliance of all state and local tax incentive agreements, ensuring timely reporting and maximization of incentive value.
Ensure adequate tax risk management to appropriately identify and evaluate tax risk and to ensure adequate financial reporting.
Continuous monitoring of tax law changes (proposed and enacted law changes, case laws etc.) for implications on MB in the United States at a State and Local levels and actively adopt changes and/or processes for MB in the jurisdictions where MB conducts business in coordination with the Tax NAFTA team.
Leadership Personnel Management Lead, motivate and develop allocated employees by target agreements and performance evaluations on the basis of the mission statement. Ensure a target oriented internal communication. Provide for employee and task related qualification regarding the requirements of ICs. Ensure the achievement of agreed targets. Ensure compliance of all applying group and local rules and regulations (safety and economic regulations, working hours regulation, policies) as well as defined processes (according to effective regulations/documents). Inform about and instruct allocated employees on the compliance of appropriate regulations. Watch resp. control proper implementation.
