IBHS is seeking an experienced commercial property underwriting professional to translate advanced catastrophe research into practical underwriting strategy that strengthens portfolios nationwide.
This is not a production underwriting role—it's a strategic, industry-facing opportunity to bridge engineering science and underwriting execution. You will work directly with leading insurers, underwriting leaders, and IBHS researchers to transform real-world loss data and full-scale testing insights into actionable underwriting guidance that drives meaningful change.
What You'll Do Translate Science into Strategy
Convert IBHS catastrophe research into practical underwriting guidance for commercial property portfolios
Identify structural loss drivers and develop evaluation frameworks that support underwriting and pricing decisions
Align emerging loss trends with research priorities to ensure real-world relevance and application
Influence Industry Practice
Partner with underwriting, product, and loss control leaders across member organizations
Support the evolution of resilience-focused underwriting strategies
Provide consultative insight that strengthens risk selection and mitigation approaches
Engage and Educate
Serve as a trusted advisor to underwriting and loss control professionals
Design and deliver presentations, workshops, and educational sessions
Collaborate with IBHS engineers to ensure research findings are operationalized within underwriting workflows
What You Bring Required Qualifications
4+ years of commercial property underwriting experience
Strong knowledge of commercial property risk assessment, policy forms, rating structures, and underwriting workflows
Experience evaluating catastrophe exposures (wind, hail, wildfire, severe weather)
Ability to translate complex technical findings into clear, practical underwriting guidance
Confidence presenting to professional audiences and influencing without direct authority
Bachelor's degree required
Preferred Qualifications
CPCU, ARM, or related insurance designations
Experience with catastrophe modeling or risk assessment tools
Track record of driving industry adoption of new underwriting practices
