Role Summary The Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting will lead all accounting and financial reporting functions for the portfolio of properties managed by SM. This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring deep commercial real estate accounting expertise, strong people management skills, and the ability to deliver accurate, timely financials in a deadline‑driven environment.
This role partners closely with clients, property and asset management teams, auditors, and senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements for clients, lenders, joint venture partners, and third parties, including monthly reporting, capital calls, distribution recommendations, and loan draw submissions
Ensure all accounting and financial reporting complies with applicable agreements, including management agreements, joint venture agreements, development agreements, and mortgage documents
Interpret lease documents and support the accounting and analysis of complex transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, debt transactions, and sophisticated lease structures
Collaborate with property and asset management teams to develop operating budgets, forecasts, CAM reconciliations, and monthly, quarterly, and annual client deliverables
Manage onboarding and offboarding of acquisitions, dispositions, and new developments, ensuring seamless accounting system transitions and proper handling of all banking activity
Verify lease data accuracy prior to system activation and ensure integrity across accounting platforms
Maintain strong working knowledge of client‑utilized accounting systems across multiple portfolios
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Accountants and Senior Accountants, ensuring high standards of quality, productivity, and professional growth
Coordinate and deliver initial and ongoing staff training aligned with company policies, procedures, and best practices
Manage multiple competing deadlines while holding team members accountable for timely and accurate deliverables
Serve as point of contact for client tax and audit engagements.
Drive continuous improvement through process automation, documentation, and cross‑department collaboration
Partner with peer leaders to share best practices and improve operational efficiency
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred but not required.
7+ years of commercial real estate accounting experience
3–5 years of people management experience
Strong experience preparing and reviewing real estate financial statements
Yardi experience required, MRI a plus
Strong knowledge of CAM, real estate tax escalations, and lease accounting
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Comfortable working in a paperless, technology‑driven, and virtual environment
