
PCC: VOLUNTEER OUTREACH REPRESENTATIVE

The Volunteer Outreach Representative plays a crucial role in supporting and expanding the Polk County Conservation Volunteer Program. This position works directly in the field alongside PCC staff and volunteers, providing on‑site guidance and support on volunteer‑assigned projects and at scheduled events that connect community members with meaningful outdoor work. This role is highly field‑focused, with an emphasis on being present with volunteers in natural areas, helping them succeed in their assigned projects, and strengthening community involvement in conservation. The position is part of the Polk County Conservation AmeriCorps Program, with a three‑quarter time commitment of 38 hours per week for 39 weeks, totaling a minimum of 1,200 hours of service. Successful applicants are not employees of Polk County and are not subject to county employment terms or benefits, but are subject to AmeriCorps rules, benefits, and requirements.
Member Duties
Complete CPR/AED and first aid training, chainsaw handling, and Iowa Pesticide Applicator certifications (Categories 2, 4, 6).
Earn NWCG certifications (S‑130, S‑190) and may receive L‑180 and IS‑700.
Receive additional training in community outreach, public speaking, volunteer coordination, and garden weed identification.
Recruit and retain volunteers.
Manage outreach activities.
Coordinate and lead events.
Train volunteers in tool use.
Promote conservation via social media.
Non‑essential duties: water quality monitoring and tool/equipment care.
All certifications must be completed within three weeks of the start date or risk dismissal.
May participate in other approved AmeriCorps activities but may not engage in unapproved tasks.
Program Benefits
Stipend ($16,620 over 1,200 hours).
Education award ($5,176.50 upon completion).
