Digital Marketing Manager
Surplus Record, Chicago, IL, United States
Surplus Record is the industry's leading marketplace for used and surplus industrial machinery, machine tools, and electrical equipment. Since 1924, we've connected buyers and sellers across manufacturing, metalworking, energy, processing, food, woodworking and other industries. We're a lean, high-impact team looking for a sharp digital marketer to help us grow our organic presence, dominate paid search, and drive more qualified traffic.
Role Overview We're looking for a hands-on Digital Marketing Manager who lives and breathes SEO and PPC. You'll own our search strategy end-to-end, from technical site audits and content optimization to managing Google Ads campaigns for thousands of industrial equipment listings. This is a high-ownership role where your work will directly impact traffic, leads, and revenue.
What You’ll Do: SEO
Own and execute our technical SEO strategy, including crawl health, site architecture, indexation, Core Web Vitals, structured data/schema markup, and internal linking across a large-scale listing marketplace.
Conduct ongoing keyword research targeting industrial equipment categories, machinery types, and buyer intent queries
Optimize listing pages, category pages, and static content for on-page SEO factors
Build and manage a content strategy (blog, guides, landing pages) to capture informational and commercial search queries
Manage and grow our backlink profile through outreach, partnerships, and digital PR
Monitor rankings, organic traffic, and conversions using Google Search Console, GA4, and third-party tools like Ahrefs or Semrush
Identify and resolve crawl errors, duplicate content, thin pages, and other technical issues at scale
PPC / Paid Search
Build, manage, and optimize Google Ads & Microsoft Advertising campaigns (Search, Display, Performance Max) targeting buyers searching for specific equipment types and categories
Write compelling ad copy tailored to industrial buyers
Manage bidding strategies, Quality Scores, negative keyword lists, and audience targeting
Track and report on campaign performance: CPC, CTR, conversion rate, ROAS — and make data-driven adjustments
Test ad variations, landing page combinations, and campaign structures continuously
Deliver clear, regular performance reports to ownership with insights and recommendations
Stay current on algorithm updates, Google Ads changes, and marketplace SEO best practices
Identify growth opportunities across new channels (email, programmatic, etc.) as bandwidth allows
What We’re Looking For
3 - 5+ years of hands-on experience in SEO and PPC, ideally at a marketplace, e-commerce site, or large content-heavy website
Proven track record of growing organic traffic and managing profitable paid search campaigns
Strong technical SEO skills — you’re comfortable in Search Console, can read a crawl report, and understand how a site with hundreds of thousands of URLs works
Proficiency with tools like Google Ads, Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, Ahrefs or Semrush, Screaming Frog, and Google Tag Manager
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and take full ownership of projects
Strong analytical mindset, you make decisions based on data, not hunches
Excellent written communication skills for ad copy and content briefs
Familiarity with B2B or industrial markets is a strong plus, but not required
Nice to Have
Experience with large-scale or programmatic SEO (optimizing hundreds of thousands of listing pages)
Familiarity with schema markup for product/listing pages
Basic HTML/CSS knowledge
Experience with email marketing or marketing automation
What We Offer
Competitive salary with yearly bonus
Hybrid Flexibility
Direct access to ownership and real decision-making authority
A stable, established brand with nearly 100 years of industry history and a massive opportunity to modernize and grow digitally
