Assistant Superintendent

Assistant Superintendent Assistant superintendents are dedicated on-site construction managers, coordinating, and overseeing detailed scopes of work and safety of field crew and subcontractors. They have highly advanced interior and exterior carpentry skills and a demonstrated ability to execute work within very tight tolerances. They have an aptitude for providing creative constructability solutions to a variety of design challenges and are key to executing the high-quality work that Dowbuilt is known for. This role requires a deep knowledge of construction best practices and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with the crew, clients, vendors, subtrades, designers, engineers/consultants, and architects.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Ensure that all promised deadlines are met, that slipping deadlines are identified early, and that new deadlines are communicated to the Superintendent and Project Manager

Lead finish crew with a positive attitude and collaborative approach. Utilize Field Check‑Ins on a quarterly basis for performance feedback, mentoring, and career development.

Conduct site walk‑throughs in order to help subcontractors prepare proposals and site‑specific safety plans

Enforce workplace rules and standards, site rules, and safety guidelines. Implement disciplinary actions when necessary.

Collaborate with Project Team to establish a finish scope estimate (i.e., Control Estimate) and co‑manage Dowbuilt labor, materials, and subcontractor costs (i.e., Cost‑to‑Complete report review)

Manage and conduct building layout & dimensional control, proficient with use of builder’s level, rotary laser levels, total stations, etc.

Collaborate with Superintendent to establish and maintain manpower projections and report any changes in resource needs to the labor management team in a timely manner. Utilize Field Labor Projections to project labor requirements.

In conjunction with Superintendent, plan, communicate, and maintain the daily and weekly work scopes and finish expectations with the crew. Utilize the 3‑week look‑ahead and other tools.

Provide Superintendent information for Daily Job Logs daily verbally or written or in Fieldwire or the approved Dowbuilt platform if you so choose.

Ensure that all employees have required tools and equipment per the Company Tool Policy, unique project requirements, and job descriptions

Provide field‑generated information regularly (as‑built drawings, photos, architectural measurements, etc.) in an accurate, thorough, complete, and legible format in Fieldwire, Sharefile and other official Dowbuilt platforms. Document as‑built information regularly.

Responsible for adherence to quality standards and finish work protection is always in place

Meet on an as‑needed basis and at the end of a project with reporting staff for Employee Development Meetings (EDMs) and written Field Check‑ins

Maintain neighbor relations with Superintendent.

Maintain a positive and solution‑oriented attitude

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

15+ years of experience as a carpenter/finish carpenter, preferably within the residential construction industry

Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of people

Ability to motivate others to perform work at their highest and best

Proficiency with company software tools: MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word), Bluebeam, FieldWire, Procore and Smartsheet

Enthusiasm for fostering an inclusive work environment, leading diverse teams, and a commitment to increasing equity for all employees

Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field and/or equivalent professional experience

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

Must complete or already have acquired the appropriate safety training commensurate with the position and location

Ability to follow instructions, take notes, and perform work as designated

Ability to be an active listener, ask for help, and suggest solutions

Be a team player and foster a positive and constructive environment onsite

Continually learn and develop new skills and capabilities

Possess technical knowledge of building methods and construction practice

Master Finish Carpenter experience and competencies include:

Trim work in either paint grade or stain grade material is tight with no gap

Crown molding install at various wall angles with coped or mitered joinery

Base coping expert

Paneling fabrication and install

Expert at dimensioning lumber to exact size – even tapered pieces of trim

Familiar with some stair work including handrails and skirt boards

Satisfactory math skills for figuring out angles and pitches for roofs, stairs, and railings

Ability to hang doors efficiently with dead even reveals on 3 sides

Customize doors to correct size and configuration including gluing up to 2-3 piece moving wall‑type doors

Ability to hang blank doors from scratch

Familiar with mortising & installing door hardware

Must have glue‑up joinery skills for shelving, table or bench tops

Familiar with sharpening techniques for chisels & plane blades. Keep edge tools sharp

Skilled and efficient cabinet installer; scribed joints in cabinetry and other casework is tight
