Technical Apparel Designer

Design Observer, Washington, District of Columbia, United States


Position Overview This role is ideal for a technically minded apparel designer who thrives in the intersection of creativity and execution. You’ll work closely with our design and development team to translate creative concepts into production‑ready garments. You’ll own the design and development process—curating design, creating tech packs, managing samples, communicating with international vendors, and ensuring our final product meets our quality standards.

Responsibilities

Concept and translate design concepts into accurate and detailed tech packs

Manage product development from initial prototype to final production approval

Collaborate with factories (international and domestic) on fit, construction, and material selection

Attend fittings, update specs, and maintain fit consistency across styles

Source fabrics and trims based on performance, durability, and style

Support timeline management to ensure key milestones are hit

Coordinate sample development and lab dips with vendors

Qualifications

3–5 years of experience in technical design or product development (menswear or performance apparel preferred)

Strong knowledge of garment textiles, construction, patternmaking, and fit across multiple categories

Experience working with overseas factories and understanding production timelines

Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and tech pack development

Familiarity with BOMs, grading, and PLM systems

Detail‑oriented and organized with excellent communication skills

Passion for golf or outdoor performance wear is a plus

The salary range for this position is between $65,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
