Job Description Designer II
Dept Engineering Overview Create test solutions for Tomorrow’s Tools. At Milwaukee Tool, Disruptive Innovation is not exclusive to the products introduced to the market; Disruptive Innovation is extended to all facets of the company including engineering support roles. As an automation team, we develop innovative automated test systems to support new product tests across North America. We work cross-functionally with new product development engineers and the test lab to define test system requirements. We make empowered decisions to rapidly take your test system design from concept to reality. Additionally, we support troubleshooting and design revisions to continuously improve existing systems.
We are looking for a mechanical designer passionate about automation, team collaboration, and product testing. An ideal designer is continuously developing their mechanical aptitude including knowledge of engineering materials, mechanism design and an understanding fabrication processes.
You’ll also be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities
Develop innovative automated test systems to support New Product Development.
Define test system requirements in collaboration with New Product Development, Test Lab, and Reliability Engineers
Create and upkeep CAD models and drawings of system assemblies, components, and systems
Able to apply GD&T to new parts and families
Assist in mechanism design with limited engineering guidance
Specify material, surface finish, heat treatment, and coatings based on application, stresses, wear, and tolerances
Hands‑on ability to build, assemble, and troubleshoot the mechanical systems and mechanisms, including diagnosing root causes, implementing corrective actions, and validating performance through iterative testing.
Create system documentation including BOM (bill of materials) and operational instructions
Work with vendors for procurement of BOM material, costing, and schedule
Analyze project risks – included but not limited to: Cost, Schedule, Procurement, Design, and Safety
Prioritize and manage multiple projects - Adhere to timelines and excel in a fast‑paced high‑energy environment
Collaborate with other engineers in technical solutions and implementation across domestic and global test labs
Maintain technical competency and remain current in technology
What TOOLS You’ll Bring With You
Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Design/Drafting or Mechanical Design of Technology
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role
Experience in mechanical design utilizing CAD – SolidWorks or NX
Strong analytical and reasoning skills with an ability to visualize processes and outcomes
Hands on experience with building, integrating, and debugging industrial systems
Experience with incorporating hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical components
Experience with FEA preferred
Mechanical aptitude in the following areas: engineering materials, mechanical properties and an understanding of the manufacturing processes associated with these materials
Growth mindset that drives personal development
High interest in tools of the construction trades
Willing to travel internationally (less than 10%)
