The Instructional Designer supports faculty and academic programs by applying instructional design principles and best practices to enhance teaching and learning across online, hybrid, and face-to-face modalities. The position provides instructional design consultation, course development support, faculty training, and guidance on educational technologies to promote student success, accessibility, and effective learning experiences.

Implements instructional and media design concepts and the development of materials and services into the various aspects of teaching and learning in all modalities. Consultation and support pertaining to the integration of instructional technologies and best practices in content delivery and curriculum development through activities and workshops. Active collaboration with faculty, staff, and members of the instructional design team in planning, designing, documenting, and training related to enhancing teaching and learning online. Demonstrates alacrity by being positive, helpful, constructive, and willing to solve problems with a can-do attitude to meet the needs of faculty, students, and members of the university community. Plans and develops developmental resources and activities for workshops, training materials, and marketing materials. Evaluates emerging technologies, design concepts, and best practices. Implements surveys to improve training opportunities and programming from faculty, student, and focus groups. Design and deliver orientation, training, and technical support to faculty and students. Works in a team-centered environment and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions Instructional Design and Course Development

Collaborates with faculty to design, revise, and improve courses using instructional design models that align learning objectives, instructional activities, and assessments.

Supports the development and transition of courses for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced face-to-face delivery.

Applies best practices related to course organization, navigation, and clarity to improve the student learning experience.

Faculty Consultation and Support

Provides individualized instructional design consultations to faculty focused on course planning, pedagogy, and continuous improvement.

Assists faculty in selecting and integrating instructional strategies that promote student engagement and active learning.

Supports faculty adoption of instructional design best practices to improve course quality and consistency.

Learning Management System and Educational Technologies

Supports faculty use of the institutional learning management system, including course templates, HTML pages, and instructional tools.

Provides guidance on the effective use of educational technologies that support instruction, assessment, and academic integrity.

Assists with the design of technology-supported learning experiences aligned with instructional goals.

Accessibility, Universal Design, and Quality Standards

Advises faculty on accessibility requirements and inclusive course design practices.

Applies Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and institutional quality standards in instructional design work.

Promotes the use of institutional templates and design standards to improve accessibility and consistency across courses.

Professional Development and Training

Designs and delivers workshops, training sessions, and instructional resources related to instructional design and educational technology.

Participates in team-based instructional design initiatives and professional development efforts coordinated by CITL.

Collaboration and Service

Collaborates with CITL staff and instructional design colleagues to support unit initiatives and shared projects.

Maintains a service-oriented approach when working with faculty, staff, and students.

Contributes to a supportive, collaborative work environment.

Physical Demands Those typical of an office/classroom environment.

Work Hours Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Additional hours if/when needed.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in an Education or related field with a minimum of one year of full-time experience in designing, developing, and delivering curriculum. The ability to demonstrate the following: Knowledge of instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues, and best practices for a variety of course modalities (traditional, hybrid, and online). Knowledge of processes and standards for planning and implementing instructional design. Knowledge of instructional strategies, curriculum standards, and assessments. Competency with online learning technologies, resources, content creation, learning management systems, and virtual meeting software. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Intrinsically motivated. Strong organizational and planning skills. Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in technical applications. Ability to employ best practices and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in traditional, hybrid, and online course curricula and materials.

Preferred Qualifications Graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Design, Educational/Instructional Technology, or closely related field. A minimum of 3 years of experience in curriculum development, training, and content development in learning management systems. The ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills in multimedia equipment and development.
