Job Summary

The Program Director oversees recreational programming and external promotions for the Parks Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administers ongoing recreational, sporting, and outdoor programs in accordance with department policies and guidelines.
  • Formulates and implements plans to improve existing programs, and develop new sustainable programs as needed.
  • Coordinates with the sport and pool operators in Park Maintenance to ensure adequate maintenance and quality control of park programming. Including but not limited to pools, splash pads, sport fields, and parks.
  • Assists in preparation of the annual budget for recreational and community programs.
  • Prepares budget requests and administers budget upon adoption, monitoring expenditure on a regular basis.
  • Works collaboratively with community members, organizations, and volunteers to advance all sporting, outdoor, and recreational opportunities for the citizens of Evansville.
  • Oversees external promotion of programming, activities, and all other events within the parks department.
  • Utilizes the city website, social media platforms, and email/text communication tools to promote and provide updates to the public.
  • Supervises, trains, and schedules all part time staff assisting with sports, pools, and recreational programs.
  • Maintains daily contact with subordinates in order to coordinate program operations throughout the Parks Department.
  • Works collaboratively with community members and organizations to advance recreational and outdoor opportunities for the citizens of Evansville.
  • Attends sport, recreational, and outdoor activities throughout the Parks Department, to oversee, provide support and feedback, evaluate staff and programming, and develop relationships with park users.
  • Provides information regarding recreational programs to the Parks Executive Director for public use.
  • Performs duties in accordance with established departmental policies, guidelines, and plans with minimal supervision.
  • Receives entry fees, posts to ledger, and forwards to Parks finance staff.
  • Oversees time management and payroll for all part‑time employees on a weekly basis.
  • Creates work schedules for various part time staff.
  • Receives telephone calls from the public and serves as a source of information regarding programs and schedules.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge

  • Ability to prepare and administer budget.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and employees.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully with the general public and patrons of programming.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in parks, recreation leisure & fitness studies, communications, community development, public administration, or recreation management (or related field), or a minimum of 5 years experience in recreation or community leadership.
  • Experience with successful program development, planning and implementation.
  • Sport management experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • This position includes an office work environment with travel to local parks and even facilities.
