Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Quality Assurance/Regional Program Director, the CDL Program Director is responsible for leading the CDL Program. The Director provides subject matter expertise, actively engages in curriculum development, revision, and implementation processes, and trains the Account Management group with product knowledge. The Program Director is responsive to student inquiries, participates in new student orientation, and oversees the hiring, orientation, development, evaluation, and recognition of Driver Trainers. Regular faculty meetings are convened, the student population is monitored and supported, and a student advising role is performed, including guidance during the provisional period, complaint resolution, career counseling, and addressing engagement or academic progress concerns. The Program Director analyzes student data, collaborates with faculty and staff to identify at‑risk students, and supports continuous program improvement through campus effectiveness plans and performance analysis.

Key Responsibilities

I. Provides Services to Students

  • Supplement Driver Trainer advising for students receiving failing assessments.
  • Provide academic advising/counseling as needed; refer to outside resources when counseling needs go beyond the scope of the school.
  • Arrange or provide student tutoring when needed.
  • Lead student retention initiatives for students in the program experiencing barriers to success.
  • Maintain regular contact with all students within the program area and respond to questions or concerns in a timely manner; post office hours for students.
  • Refer students to appropriate staff for non‑academic problem resolution.
  • Contact students who miss days from class or accumulate more than four absences during the course.
  • Maintain records of interactions and correspondence with students (phone calls, emails, mail).
  • Monitor contact and results of contact from Driver Trainers to students; make weekly calls to students who were not reached, did not return as promised, or did not offer return plans; offer appropriate academic advice.
  • Identify students needing tutoring.

II. Oversees Status of Quality of Curriculum, Instructional Materials, Equipment, and Facilities

  • Serve as subject matter expert regarding academic curriculum for the program area.
  • Provide feedback in the curriculum development/revision process led by the Home Office Executive team.
  • Implement new and revised curriculum.
  • Provide weekly recaps of cohort performance.

III. Oversees Faculty Performance and Development

  • Orient, monitor, supervise, mentor, and assist new Driver Trainers when assigned.
  • Provide leadership and support for all staff and supervise their instructional and program needs.
  • Attend weekly day and evening faculty meetings, covering improvement of course offerings, instructional delivery methods, text selection, and other quality‑improvement topics.
  • Provide information to all departments about trends and changes in program specialty areas.
  • Attend faculty meetings and in‑service programs; maintain a record of professional development activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal and state regulations and accreditation standards related to the program area.
  • Participate in preparation of government and accreditation reports, ensuring timely submission and accuracy.
  • Assist the Director of Quality Assurance/Regional Program Director in evaluating data from student questionnaires; conduct faculty conferences and recommend improvements.
  • Collaborate with peers and associates to coordinate interdepartmental activities.
  • Perform all duties of a full‑time Driver Trainer.

Experience and Education Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • CDL license.
  • 3 years of academic instruction experience in a post‑secondary environment.
  • 5 years of industry experience in the field of instruction.
  • 2 years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Ability to qualify as a CDL Driver/Driver Trainer.
  • Knowledge of faculty development requirements, delivery methods, and reporting.
  • Motivation, dedication, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and requirements of adult learners.
  • Ability and desire to embrace the school’s mission.
  • Ability to inspire students to attain the highest level of achievement in preparation for meeting employer expectations.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and requirements within the field of instruction.
  • Knowledge of and ability to facilitate learning on course content within the field of instruction.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and database programs (CampusVue preferred).

  • Knowledge of the federal FMCSA and state Department of Motor Vehicle standards.

Experience and Education Preferred

  • Associate’s Degree or higher, or documented specialized competency within the field of instruction, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years of academic instruction experience in a post‑secondary environment.
  • 10 years of experience in the field of instruction.
  • Working knowledge of federal/state government education regulations.
  • 3 years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience as an academic program director.
  • Experience in student guidance or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of federal/state government regulations.

Physical Demands

  • Mobility & Balance: Ability to frequently climb in/out of the cab, bend, squat, kneel, twist, and reach to perform pre/post‑trip inspections and navigate tight spaces.
  • Strength: Ability to crank trailer landing gear (often 100+ lbs), handle training and safety equipment, and potentially assist with loading/unloading.
  • Endurance: Ability to sustain physical activity and remain alert during extended driving and instructional periods, including exposure to varying weather conditions such as heat, cold, wind, rain, ice, or snow.
  • Sensory Acuity and Overall Health: Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and meet DOT physical qualifications required to hold a CDL, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Specific Tasks & Considerations

  • Physically demonstrate skills such as coupling/uncoupling trailers, performing inspections, and maneuvering the large vehicle.
  • Work outdoors in various conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow while training.
