Instrument & Electrical Designer

is responsible for developing detailed design packages for instrumentation and electrical systems in industrial facilities, including oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, and manufacturing environments. The role includes creating drawings, designing layouts, supporting engineers, and ensuring all work meets industry standards and client specifications.

Responsibilities Instrumentation Design

Develop P&IDs, loop sheets, instrument index, and input/output lists

Design field instrumentation layouts including instrument locations, supports, cable routing, and junction box locations.

Prepare wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, installation details, and panel drawings.

Coordinate with vendors for instrument specifications and interface requirements.

Electrical Design

Create electrical drawings including single-line diagrams, motor schematics, grounding layouts, and cable schedules.

Design low-voltage/high-voltage power distribution systems and control panel layouts.

Develop conduit layouts, lighting layouts, and electrical equipment plans.

Size cables, conduits, breakers, and protection devices under supervision of an engineer.

Support arc-flash, load flow, and short-circuit studies by providing design data.

Project & Technical Support

Work collaboratively with engineers, drafters, project engineers, and construction teams.

Conduct field walks to verify existing conditions, gather design data, and support installation work.

Implement design changes and maintain revision controls.

Ensure designs comply with relevant codes and standards (ISA, ANSI, NEC, API, IEEE).

Participate in design reviews, model reviews, and drawing QA/QC.

Requirements Qualifications

High school diploma or Associates Degree with adequate drafting courses.

5+ years of experience in I&E design for industrial projects.

Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI/Intools), MicroStation.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.

Strong understanding of:

ISA instrumentation symbols & standards

NEC electrical requirements

Cable routing and raceway design

P&IDs and control system architecture

Ability to interpret engineering documents, vendor drawings, and construction standards.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Must be able to understand and comply with company policies, procedures, and processes.

Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Willingness to travel and work in office and field environments as necessary.

Preferred Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree or Associates Degree.

Certificate in Design/Drafting.

Familiarity with 3D plant design tools (E3D, Plant 3D, SmartPlant 3D).

Experience working directly with construction or commissioning teams.

Knowledge of hazardous area classification and electrical equipment selection.

Physical Demands Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, use of arm/hand steadiness, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, multi limb coordination, oral expression, and comprehension. May be required to lift, carry and move objects safely.

Work Environment Work will be in a general office environment operating and functioning in a fast-paced work environment. Occasionally required to work in an industrial location where noise levels will be moderate to high. Job sites may contain the following: light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools, people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking. Noise levels vary and may include bells, whistles, and alarms.
