General Description We are seeking a Tax Paralegal to join our team! This person will assist the Tax Controversy group in various types of legal matters and provide assistance in preparing legal documents; research and compile data; prepare drafts of documents; maintain responsibility for files, calendars and meetings, etc.

Key Responsibilities And Essential Job Functions

Case Management

Track client document submissions / responses

Create OneDrive or HighQ sites for clients to submit documents

Follow up with clients (or remind attorneys to) re document submissions

Submit documents to the IRS

Track submissions

Manage HK Workflow Design IRS Audit Tracker and the pending Litigation Tracker

Trial Support

Calendar statute deadlines

Conform court filings to local rules

Track filings from opposing counsel

Calendar deadlines for filings

Maintain electronic pleading pads

Prepare indices, appendices, and other exhibits to court filings

Prepare exhibit lists

Organize complex facts

Document Drafting

Start draft documents from preexisting templates

Proofread documents for finalization

Prepare and assemble exhibits

Prepare physical mailings, review for document completeness, and confirm delivery

Prepare tax entity and structure charts

Use firm AI tools to create templates for commonly used responses to the IRS (e.g., penalty abatement requests)

Legal Research

Track and keep group apprised of changes to developing legislation and cases, particularly existing ERC cases

Gather and organize statutes, regulations, and IRS guidance and governmental orders for ERC cases

Use firm AI tools to teach the LLM (language learning model) specific tax terms which will result in more accurate tax search results

State and Federal Searches, Forms, and Filings

Prepare federal and state powers of attorney for tax controversy matters and file with CAF unit

Obtain IRS taxpayer transcripts and other records from state or IRS

Perform SOS and Comptroller searches for entity names, dbas, filing history, ownership information, and tax compliance

Required Skills

Organizational skills and attention to detail to work independently, meet frequent deadlines and produce a high-quality work product.

Organizational skills to maintain daily accounting of time records and input timesheets into the system directly.

Communication skills to interact with all levels of internal staff, attorneys and management and external clients of the firm.

Analytical and critical thinking skills sufficient to make decisions regarding daily work.

Time management skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.

Document management, tracking, and AI skills or ability to quickly learn.

E‑filing skills.

Required Qualifications & Education

5 – 10 years of experience in a related area.

Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications & Education

Paralegal certification a plus.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Moderate or advanced keyboard usage.

District of Columbia – $40.60 - $61.00/hrly.
