External Relations Intern

Project Overview The External Relations intern will assist with cross-departmental projects including team meetings, communications, and culture initiatives. In close collaboration with the Director, External Relations, and Specialist, Administration & Special Projects, the intern will provide high-level administrative support to the Chief Development & External Relations Officer. Additional responsibilities include supporting Washington D.C. office needs and department events including the Summit for America’s Youth.

Internship Timeline Must be available from June 2 - August 5, 2026.

Location Office-based in Washington, DC (hybrid model - 3 days remote / 2 days in office Tuesday & Wednesday).

Compensation $17.00/hr (Up to 20-40 hrs/wk).

What You Will Be Doing The intern will support the External Relations Department with events, team communications, cultural activities, strategy development, data tracking, project planning, and other tasks as necessary.

Responsibilities Project Objectives

Improve verbal and written communication skills by interacting with executives, writing high-level strategic communications, and helping prepare team materials and presentations.

Support a department event from start to finish to develop planning, management, and evaluative skills while also gaining experience in logistics, budgeting, and event promotion.

Enhance ability to track multiple projects over extended periods including data analysis, strategy development, and project planning.

Project Tasks

Prepare and execute materials for team meetings and culture projects including department meetings, Board of Governors meetings, and team-building activities.

Collaborate with team members to organize large events through administrative support, project planning, and more.

Develop and implement a comprehensive system for tracking multiple projects over extended periods including a framework for data tracking, strategies for ongoing projects, and detailed project plans to ensure effective monitoring and management throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Deliverables

Written professional development / culture strategy for External Relations Department.

Successful execution of Summit for America’s Youth, team / department onsite events, etc.

Detailed project plans and data analysis.

Qualifications What we’re looking for

Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Eagerness to learn.

Strong interest in project management in not-for-profit environments.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to manage time appropriately.

Ability to interact professionally with Congressional staffers, BGCA senior leadership, local Club leaders, and government officials.

Education / Major Business, Communications, Political Science/Public Policy, or other applicable coursework.

Skills

Applicants should demonstrate interest in Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Experience using Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel.

A track record of reliability, independent work, and creativity.
