Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor degree AND at least 1 year clerical or para‑professional experience in a legal setting.

Associate degree AND at least 3 years clerical or para‑professional experience in a legal setting.

At least 5 years clerical or para‑professional experience in a legal setting.

Starting Pay

Step A: $28.44 hourly ($59,156)

Step B: $29.33 hourly ($61,002)

Step C: $30.25 hourly ($62,927)

Step D: $31.21 hourly ($64,925)

Step E: $32.25 hourly ($67,076)

Must be able to perform essential job duties and functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

JOB SUMMARY Performs a wide variety of legal duties involved in the assignment of attorneys to indigent criminal cases and record keeping for the Defender office; works under the supervision of the Chief Public Defender or designee; performs related duties as required.

Essential Job Duties And Functions

Performs the day‑to‑day activities of the Defender program.

Formulates the need for attorneys with the Chief Public Defender or designee.

Prepares monthly calendars for the assignment of counsel.

Coordinates reimbursement requests for the costs of defense.

Prepares drafts of orders and other routine pleadings at the direction of the Chief Public Defender or designee.

Utilizes computer terminals, word processing and statistical analysis not limited to assignment of counsel, types of cases assigned and frequency of appointment.

Answers questions relating to the assignment of counsel that do not require the judgment of the Chief Public Defender.

Secures financial information from walk‑in defendants who are requesting court‑appointed counsel.

Works closely with Administrative Supervisor in compiling and analyzing statistical reports as required.

Works with the pre‑bail staff in developing the roster of defendants for whom counsel must be appointed.

Assists the Chief Public Defender in securing replacement counsel where necessary.

Communicates with Court staff regarding assignment of counsel.
