Full-Time, Exempt Position | Reports to Executive Producer and Artistic Director
THE OPPORTUNITY
The B Street Theatre seeks an experienced Technical Director to lead all technical build elements for eleven productions annually at the Sofia Tsakopoulos Center for the Arts. The Sofia Center, which opened in 2018, houses two exceptional performance venues: the 380-seat Sutter Theatre (proscenium) and the 250-seat Voris Mainstage (thrust). The Center serves as home to B Street Theatre, Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Opera and Philharmonic, and Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Salary: $ 70,304 - $75,000 annually
- Vacation: Two weeks annual vacation (prorated)
- Health Insurance: 80% reimbursement of individual plan OR $300/month (whichever is greater) with applicable payroll deductions after six months
- Additional Insurance: Dental, vision, chiropractic, acupuncture, and life insurance available after 90 days (partially subsidized)
THE ROLE
The Technical Director serves as the critical liaison between scenic designers, artistic staff, the scene shop, and all production areas. You will supervise and coordinate all aspects of scenic engineering, budgeting, drafting, construction, and load-in/out for:
- B Street Theatre Mainstage (7-show season)
- B Street Family Series (4-show season)
- Special projects throughout the year
Additional responsibilities include maintenance of Sofia Center technical facilities, vehicle maintenance scheduling, and over-hire management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design & Planning
- Collaborate with scenic designers, directors, and production management to achieve designs within budget and schedule
- Plan construction techniques, special requirements, and interdepartmental coordination
- Participate in season planning including script analysis, preliminary budgeting, and scheduling
Construction & Execution
- Coordinate and execute all scenery construction, including drafting, engineering, and installation
- Maintain build schedules coordinating scene shop flow with other production areas
- Supervise load-ins, remounts, and strikes for all productions
- Direct over-hire crews and interns when applicable
Management & Operations
- Process HR and accounting paperwork, including timesheets, accident reports, and spending reports
- Acquire and manage inventory of materials and equipment
- Supervise daily scene shop operations and enforce all safety protocols
- Maintain machinery, tools, bulk inventory, and scenic inventory
- Assist with shop facility maintenance and supervise vehicle maintenance
- Attend production and staff meetings, rehearsals, tech rehearsals, and preview performances as requested
- Maintain communication with designers and relay design information to production staff
