Newsroom Summer Intern

Times Union Media Group, Albany, NY, United States

Summer 2026 Newsroom Internship Times Union | Albany, NY (Capital Region & Hudson Valley)

The Times Union, the leading news organization in New York’s Capital Region and Hudson Valley, is now accepting applications for its Summer 2026 Internship Program.

Widely respected for its commitment to local news and watchdog journalism — particularly coverage of state government and politics — the Times Union has earned numerous state and national awards. In 2022, we were named a Newspaper of Distinction by the Journalists Association of New York.

Our interns are paid and fully integrated into the newsroom, gaining hands‑on experience while helping produce the Capital Region’s most impactful journalism.

The internship runs for up to 11 weeks during summer 2026, from June 1 to August 14. However, start and end dates are flexible.

Our newsroom operates in a hybrid environment, with staff working both remotely and in the office at least three days per week.

About the Internship We offer training in reporting — news, sports, business and/or features — as well as audience engagement. Interns will be assigned an editor, participate in team meetings and may join training sessions on topical subjects. When applying, please note which beat — news, features, sports — you are most interested in.

Interns will regularly produce a compelling mix of stories. They should be adept at reporting and able to write accurately and meet deadlines. Interns must be able to travel for news coverage as required and collaborate with editors and other team members on stories and brainstorming.

Preferred Qualifications

Must be located in the Capital Region or Hudson Valley for the duration of the internship.

Must have reliable transportation and be able to drive to assignments.

Students enrolled in a journalism concentration and/or experience working at a college publication, either print or online.

Interns must be enrolled in a degree‑granting program at an accredited college or university, or have graduated within the past year, at the time of application.

Willingness to collaborate and contribute to a fast‑paced newsroom.

Some great candidates may not check all the boxes for this role. If you’re passionate, dedicated and interested in interning with us but don’t have all the skills listed, you should apply and tell us more about what you bring to the table. The internship is generally aimed at juniors, seniors and graduate students, but our selection committee will consider anyone who meets the minimum qualifications.

How to Apply

Submit a cover letter, resume and three references.

Include links or PDF copies of work samples.

Include any good work you’ve done — even if it doesn’t fit the traditional mold.

When writing your cover letter, think about:

Why you wish to intern for the Times Union.

What you are interested in doing during your internship.

Your goals and expectations for the internship.

What makes you the best candidate?

The dates you are available.

Selection will be based on portfolio, experience (college and professional), cover letter and references. Finalists will then be interviewed.
