What We're Looking For As a Sales Application Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in translating complex project requirements into high-performance cooling solutions that deliver superior efficiency, reliability, and lifecycle value for some of the most demanding HVAC applications.
You will partner closely with Sales, consulting engineers, contractors, and internal product teams to design optimized cooling solutions that help Smardt win high-profile projects across North America.
This role blends engineering depth, customer interaction, and commercial impact, giving you direct influence on some of the most technically demanding HVAC applications in the market.
This role requires 25-30% travel to customer and client sites, and industry events and trade shows.
What You'll Do Sales & Application Engineering
Partner with Regional Sales Managers and representatives to understand customer requirements, project specifications, and system design challenges.
Develop optimized equipment selections and system solutions that meet performance, cost, and energy efficiency requirements.
Prepare technical proposals, equipment selections, and application recommendations aligned with project specifications and Smardt product capabilities.
Review project documentation including specifications, bid documents, and schedules to ensure accurate and competitive proposals.
Evaluate competitor equipment selections and provide strategic technical positioning for Smardt solutions.
Customer & Consultant Engagement
Serve as the technical expert supporting the sales team throughout the project lifecycle.
Deliver technical presentations and product training to consulting engineers, contractors, and end users.
Represent Smardt at industry events, conferences, and technical forums such as ASHRAE, AHR Expo, and regional industry events.
Support technical discussions during project design, specification development, and system optimization.
Provide post-sales technical guidance, troubleshooting support, and application expertise when needed.
Solution Optimization & Competitive Strategy
Analyze project opportunities to optimize system performance, lifecycle cost, and energy efficiency.
Benchmark Smardt equipment performance against competitive HVAC equipment and develop technical positioning strategies.
Provide insights into market trends, customer requirements, and competitive product offerings.
Support the development of application guidelines, selection tools, and technical resources for internal and external stakeholders.
Product & Technical Tool Development
Identify enhancements and improvements for Smardt's selection software and application tools.
Report software issues, improvement opportunities, and user feedback to internal engineering teams.
Support the development of technical documentation including:
Installation, Operation & Maintenance manuals
Product literature and engineering guides
Sales engineering tools and training resources
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Service teams to ensure proposed solutions align with manufacturing capabilities, delivery schedules, and serviceability.
Support Marketing initiatives by contributing to technical content, application notes, and product positioning materials.
Provide technical feedback that supports future product development and innovation.
What You'll Bring Experience
3–7+ years of experience in:
HVAC applications engineering
Mechanical system design
Technical sales engineering
Experience supporting commercial or industrial HVAC equipment.
Technical Expertise
Strong understanding of:
Chilled water systems
Commercial HVAC system design
Centrifugal or large tonnage chillers
Energy efficiency metrics (IPLV/NPLV, COP)
System optimization and lifecycle cost analysis
Communication Skills
Ability to explain complex engineering concepts clearly to customers and internal teams.
Strong presentation and technical storytelling ability.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline required or equivalent industry experience.
