Managing Director, Social Impact Fund

The selected candidate’s location is flexible, provided it allows for effective, cost‑efficient travel. The Association’s Social Impact Funds (SIF) comprise a social impact venture fund with a mission to improve the health and well‑being of individuals by addressing key social determinants of health. The SIF invests in for‑profit companies through equity and debt instruments and supports non‑profit entities through grants and loans. Our goal is to make a meaningful impact on underserved populations across the United States through equitable, balanced entrepreneurial innovations. Responsibilities

The Managing Director serves as the leader of the SIF program and team, reporting to the Managing Partner of American Heart Association Ventures. The role requires a committed individual with superior analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal, and a serious commitment to delivering positive social impact.

  • Lead the operation and team of a key unit of the Association's Ventures, ensuring financial efficacy and mission delivery.
  • Establish, organize, and facilitate governance and operating models, investment strategies, prospecting, due diligence, peer review process, and portfolio management.
  • Drive strategy to improve the health and well‑being of individuals in under‑resourced communities, addressing social determinants of health.
  • Communicate external market trends to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Convene and facilitate key volunteers and stakeholders as needed.
  • Oversee collaboration, integration, and accountability with senior leadership and committees on mission impact and strategic plans.
  • Work with the Center for Health Metrics and Evaluation to develop and track KPIs and metrics for success.
  • Coordinate and execute projects required to launch and sustain the Funds.
  • Represent the Association's Social Impact Funds with judgment and integrity.
  • Identify potential issues proactively and resolve mission‑critical developments.
  • Drive growth and impact of the Funds through problem‑solving and a dynamic start‑up environment.
  • Develop and execute a marketing strategy to raise awareness of the Social Impact Funds.
  • Lead a growing team and manage engagement of community strategy managers and matrixed management within the Association.
  • Collaborate with business development and fundraising staff to acquire additional financial support.
  • Implement the operational plan, including hiring and motivating key leadership roles.
  • Develop partnership models and recruit partners.

Qualifications

  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in social impact investing, venture capital, or similar expertise.
  • Building and negotiating partnerships and alliances.
  • Collaboration with executives, steering committees, and authority advisors.
  • Entrepreneurial or start‑up experience.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong understanding of social determinants of health and commitment to promoting health.
  • Knowledge of evolving business models, financial models, and impact investing tools (equity, debt, grants, PRI). Basic business financials.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to engage with high‑level leaders, portfolio company CEOs, investors, fundraisers, media.
  • Experience managing direct reports and external consultants in a matrixed environment.
  • Relationship‑building, partnership development, program implementation, measurement experience.
  • Existing network of social investors preferred.
  • Highly organized with excellent interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Fundraising and/or business development experience preferred.
  • Detail‑oriented, mission‑focused, team‑oriented.
  • Ability to produce high‑quality quantitative and qualitative work products under tight deadlines.
  • Travel required (at least 25%), local and overnight stays.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary minimum to the midpoint of the range is $158,200.00 to $243,500.00. Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials may apply. This position is eligible for incentives, with the potential to earn up to 22% of base pay.
