Position Overview

Position title: Monterey Bay Area Mathematics Project Director ( Academic Coordinator II, FY)

Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $84,246 - $141,646. The actual salary will be dependent on the position's percentage of time.

Percent time: Variable, between 10-100%, based on the availability of funding.

Anticipated start: July 1, 2026

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description

Associate Teaching Professor Pedro Morales-Almazan with the Monterey Bay Area Mathematics Project (MBAMP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the MBAMP Director. MBAMP provides professional development for K‑12 mathematics teachers across Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties. MBAMP serves Region 5B of the California Subject Matter Projects – a statewide effort. Through events such as summer institutes and a community math teacher circle, MBAMP brings together mathematicians, teachers, and administrators.

MBAMP events focus on building knowledge of mathematics; improving skills in instruction; enhancing and practicing leadership skills; and assisting in curriculum development.

Summary of Duties

  • Work under the supervision of the Monterey Bay Area Math Project Principal Investigator, currently Associate Teaching Professor Pedro Morales‑Almazan.
  • Coordinate all MBAMP activities and personnel; provide and direct outreach to regional schools and districts.
  • Acquire funding through public and private sources, especially through California agencies.
  • Supervise staff and mentor teacher participants.
  • Develop and coordinate all of MBAMP’s core events: teacher leader institutes, professional development workshops, colloquium series, one‑day conferences, focus and peer review groups, classroom observations, and peer coaching.
  • Serve as a liaison between UCSC math and education faculty and the regional K‑12 education community.
  • Collaborate with UCSC CalTeach program, connecting undergraduate students with in‑service K‑12 teachers and internships.

Outreach

Coordinate fee‑for‑service programs; identify schools, develop appropriate professional development, negotiate contracts, and supervise events.

Acquisition of Funding

Research and personally write proposals, work with grant‑writers at UCSC, and apply for grants. Responsible for grant activity, compliance, and reporting. Typical funding sources include:

  • Seed funding from the California Subject Matter Projects, which must be renewed annually.
  • Particular funding opportunities from the State of California targeting CSMPs.
  • Public and private sources related to strengthening K‑12 teaching of mathematics.
  • Broader impact funding available to UCSC faculty.

Supervision and Mentorship

May supervise personnel including a program coordinator and student interns. Expected to recruit and mentor teachers to become teacher‑leaders.

Qualifications

The hiring unit encourages applications from candidates with experience mentoring teachers, supervising staff, acquiring grants, working with school districts or offices of education, and organizing complex events.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field, or education.
  • Training and experience teaching mathematics in a K‑12 setting.
  • Teaching certification equivalent to a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics or a Multiple Subject Credential.
  • Experience leading Professional Learning for K‑12 teachers.
