Overview We are seeking a full-time

Mechanical Designer 1

at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the development of mechanical solutions by providing CAD modeling and drafting support, documentation, testing, assembling, and other technical support within a team-oriented environment.

Essential Functions

Support completion of basic mechanical designs for Garmin products

Apply knowledge of math, science and physics, strong spatial skills, and a pragmatic approach to partner with experienced engineers & mechanical designers in taking product concepts to mass production

Model basic parts and components including injection molded plastic, die cast aluminum and zinc, sheet metal, CNC machined and screw machine fabricated parts, compression molded rubber, extrusions, display components, flex circuits, touch panels, speaker enclosures, mounting systems, etc.

Assist with sourcing of components such as electrical connectors, speakers, microphones, LCDs, backlights, keypads, switches, electric motors, screw machined parts, rotary controls, batteries, fasteners, lubricants and antennas

Coordinate basic test plans and assist in executing product testing to verify compliance with design requirements

Interface with Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and other departments for discussion of basic designs

Maintain configuration control of documentation for products in production and interface with available drafting and document control resources

Apply design standards, procedures, and engineering tools to implement basic designs

Utilize feedback from Mechanical Engineers and update mechanical designs per recommendations

Understand importance of thoroughly documenting work in an organized manner

Demonstrate strong communication skills while providing visibility to supervisor and mentor on status of work

Present information effectively through reports, meetings, and other means of communication

Identify/resolve defects of basic scope using proper engineering tools and techniques

Basic Qualifications

2-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology

AND

a minimum of 2 years relevant experience

OR

an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge

Demonstrated knowledge of CAD software and ability to model parts using basic and advanced features

Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

4-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology

Previous experience working in a team environment

Previous work or internship experience in design, particularly for consumer products

Experience using Onshape and/or SolidWorks CAD systems that includes surface modeling and sheet metal designs

Experience with SolidWorks Products Data Management (PDM) system or similar document management system

Experience with testing of products to verify compliance and design requirements

Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)

Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience
