Location: Remote Southwest Central (TX/OK/AR/MN). The Medical Science Liaison, CART Immunology – Southwest Central covers the Southwest Central region (TX/OK/AR/MN). The associate must reside within the territory or within a reasonable daily commuting distance of 50 miles from the territory border.
Role Overview The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific position. The MSL’s objective is to create impact by advancing clinical practice within the assigned territory to improve patient outcomes. The MSL demonstrates deep therapeutic expertise, understands territory and market influences, engages scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manages and develops their territory, and executes activities aligned with the medical strategic and tactical plan while adhering to the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance policies, and Working Practice documents. The MSL informs and shapes medical strategy by collecting impactful insights and understanding their potential strategic impact.
Responsibilities
The MSL leverages scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build professional relationships and engage with HCPs (including community physicians, pharmacists, medical experts, nurses, and other healthcare professionals) and other thought leaders in the geographical area as aligned with medical strategy.
Engage with customers in activities such as emerging data discussions, clinical trial activities, understanding barriers in the patient journey, market dynamics within the territory, areas of unmet medical need, pipeline discussions, disease state and product education, adverse event capture, and collection of medical insights across the product lifecycle.
Demonstrate strategic territory vision and plan Medical Engagements (MEs) and Key Accounts in alignment with medical strategy, in collaboration with internal colleagues. This includes:
Identification of key stakeholders influencing the patient journey and disease space to inform education, engagement, and partnership strategies.
Identification of opportunities for partnerships with academic centers, centers of excellence, and/or systems of care to drive impact.
Involvement of HCPs or MEs when a medical need is identified (e.g., publications, clinical trial participation).
Internal collaboration opportunities to advance therapeutic area, clinical, or product goals.
Provide clinical trial support for company-sponsored trials and collaborate cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations.
Collaborate regularly with internal teams (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, commercial, sales) within the therapeutic area to advance clinical practice while maintaining customer-centricity and a One Novartis approach in accordance with compliance standards.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of the assigned therapeutic area and Novartis compounds to serve as a medical resource for customers and internal colleagues.
Maintain knowledge of internal policies and external regulations and how they affect day-to-day responsibilities.
Execute administrative responsibilities and training (e.g., Veeva CRM, voicemail, email, expense reports, compliance modules) timely, including profiling core customers and ensuring up-to-date CRM information.
Position Requirements
Strong clinical knowledge including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, medical expert engagement strategies, and FDA promotional guidelines, regulations, and ethical guidelines as applied to the pharmaceutical industry.
Compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Novartis policies.
Adherence to Ethics, Compliance and Promotional policies (Novartis & Federal) and commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment.
Adherence to company policies, state and federal laws and regulations.
Field-Based Region covering Southwest Central (TX/OK/AR/MN). Residency within the territory or within 50 miles of the border.
Defined working hours and travel expectations by the hiring manager. Approximately 60-70% travel (face-to-face, virtual, email, telephone) to achieve performance and business objectives.
Education and Experience
MSL, Manager level:
Education: Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD).
Experience: 0-3 years in a Field Medical position within the pharmaceutical industry or as an MSL is required, or 3-5 years of relevant medical affairs, clinical research, or related experience preferred.
MSL, Associate Director level:
Education: Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD).
Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a Field Medical position within the pharmaceutical industry or as an MSL is preferred, or 5-7 years of relevant medical affairs, clinical research, or related experience required.
Compensation and Benefits The salary range is provided for Manager: $145,600 - $270,400 and Associate Director: $160,300 - $297,700 per year. Final salary is determined by factors including relevant skills and experience. Compensation includes a performance-based cash incentive and potential eligibility for annual equity awards. US-based employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, including health, life and disability benefits, a 401(k) with company contribution and match, and other benefits. Generous time off includes vacation, personal days, holidays, and other leaves.
