Vice President, Institutional Giving

American Progress seeks a dynamic, results-driven Vice President for Institutional Giving to serve as a key member and leader of the organization's Development department. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), this role will lead and oversee the management of the four-person Institutional Giving team; work closely with the CDO on building organizational relationships with foundations, corporations, and labor organizations; and manage the institutional engagement for a portfolio of policy teams. The ideal candidate will possess an existing network of strong institutional relationships and demonstrated success in effectively leveraging organizational leadership for donor cultivation. Responsibilities: Lead and directly manage a four-person Institutional Giving team, serving as coach, mentor, and strategic partner in achieving the team's combined annual fundraising goal. Manage a portfolio of 2530 foundation prospects at the six- and seven-figure level, developing and executing tailored cultivation and solicitation strategies that grow unrestricted support and generate new programmatic funding. Maintain deep fluency in foundation, corporate, and labor philanthropyincluding emerging trends and recent giving patternsto provide timely, informed counsel to executive leadership. Collaborate with American Progress program staff and executive leadership to cultivate and steward relationships with current and prospective institutional donors. Develop and prepare a full range of foundation-facing materials, including letters of inquiry, proposals, grant reports, grant agreements, acknowledgment letters, presentations, and donor correspondence. Oversee comprehensive donor stewardship by tracking grant requirements and deadlines, managing funder communications, coordinating with program and finance staff to monitor grant expenditures, and leading monthly grant spending reconciliation. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements and qualifications: 10+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising or a related field, including a minimum of five years managing a foundation portfolio generating seven figures or more annually in philanthropic revenue. Established and active network of relationships with foundation program officers and philanthropic decision-makers in policy areas aligned with the organization's mission (e.g., economic, climate, democracy, and health policy). Proven track record of building and leading high-performing fundraising teams, including hiring and coaching front-line development staff. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong portfolio of successful six- and seven-figure foundation grant proposals, reports, and budgets authored or coauthored. Data-driven mindset with hands-on experience using CRM systems to manage portfolios, analyze fundraising performance, forecast revenue, and inform strategic decision-making. Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines across a complex, fast-paced portfolio without sacrificing quality or attention to detail. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience required. Deep commitment to the mission of American Progress and to advancing a broad progressive policy agenda.
