Job Summary Under general supervision, apprehends, impounds, rehomes, and euthanizes as necessary unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals within the Sand Springs city limits in accordance with state and local laws, rules and regulations. Focuses on pet adoption through appropriate means. Assists with enforcement of public nuisance, zoning, health and safety, and other codes and ordinances of the City of Sand Springs. Animal Welfare Officers must be available for emergency callouts and weekend care of sheltered animals.

Major Responsibilities

Investigate all animal nuisances, dog bites, or cruelty cases in compliance with state laws and City ordinances, and prepare reports in oral, written or electronic formats regarding any case that may require further investigation, or initiation of civil or criminal processes

Enforces city animal control ordinances by impounding unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals

Examines dog licenses for validity and issue citations or warnings to delinquent owners

Examines apprehended animals for injuries and deliver injured animals to veterinarian for medical treatment

Maintains the animal shelter in a safe and sanitary condition, both inside and out, for animals and humans

Maintains an inventory control system to monitor drugs used in the euthanization of animals

Administers vaccinations to dogs and cats as allowable by law

Inserts microchip identification on licensed cats and dogs

Supplies food, water, and personal care to detained animals

Orders and maintains supplies and equipment for the shelter

Encourages adoption of unclaimed animals, or euthanize those not adopted or fostered

Receives or initiates cases involving violations of the public nuisance, zoning, health and safety, and other codes and ordinances of the City of Sand Springs. Inspect as necessary affected properties for resolution of violations using civil or criminal processes

Assists other employees with general departmental functions.

Performs other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments as required.

Minimum Qualifications & Required Knowledge

High school graduate or GED

Valid Class “D” Oklahoma Driver license

One to two-year’s previous experience in the apprehension or handling of animals

Animal Euthanasia Technician or the ability to obtain within one year of hire

Completion of Oklahoma Animal Control Association training academy or the ability to complete within one year of hire (This course may be waived in lieu of two-year’s previous experience in like position or veterinary clinic performing duties relevant to course training)

Code enforcement certification through the Oklahoma code Enforcement Association or the ability to obtain within two years of hire
