Overview Senior Executive Director of Marketing and Communications

The

Senior Executive Director of Marketing and Communications

serves as the chief marketing officer and chief steward of institutional brand, voice and reputation. The Senior Executive Director will operate with an enterprise-wide perspective, aligning marketing and communications strategy with institutional strategies to ensure scalable, secure, and sustainable marketing and communications capabilities across the University. Reporting to the AVP for Strategic Enrollment Initiatives and serving as a member of the President's Cabinet, the senior executive director provides leadership for integrated marketing, communications, public relations, and digital engagement to advance institutional priorities, strengthen public trust and support continued enrollment growth.

The senior executive director will partner collaboratively across Enrollment, Academic Affairs, and all divisions of the University to ensure unified institutional positioning while overseeing enrollment marketing efforts.

Responsibilities

Exercise enterprise-level leadership for Marketing and Communications by advancing strategies, systems, and governance structures that optimize institutional outcomes.

Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Marketing and Communications Department; supervise and mentor professional staff, fostering accountability, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Serve as a senior advisor to the President and Cabinet on strategic communications, branding positioning and reputation related matters.

Lead crisis and issues communications planning and response in coordination with the Office of the President and Emergency Management.

Develop and execute a comprehensive, integrated marketing and communications strategy aligned with the University's strategic plan and institutional goals. Serve as chief steward of the University's brand identity; establish and enforce institutional brand standards and ensure consistent messaging across all platforms and audiences.

Oversee strategic public relations and media relations efforts to elevate institutional visibility.

Partner with Enrollment to align marketing strategies with undergraduate, graduate, and transfer recruitment priorities.

Oversee the university's digital strategy, including web governance, accessibility, user experience, analytics, search optimization, and emerging technologies.

Lead internal communications strategies that promote transparency, alignment, and campus engagement.

Establish metrics, workflows and reporting practices to assess performance and improve outcomes.

Manage the department's budget and oversee external vendors and agency contracts.

Collaborate with all divisions and University stakeholders to align strategies and initiatives for a unified institutional image.

Report regularly to senior leadership on strategy, outcomes and impact.

Salary and Benefits Salary:

$105,000 - $115,000 commensurate with experience. SUNY Oneonta is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) qualifying employer. Information on SUNY's comprehensive benefits offerings can be found at

Requirements Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in marketing and communications.

Demonstrated success leading integrated marketing strategies tied to growth outcomes.

Experience supervising professional staff and managing complex, cross-functional initiatives.

Additional

Exceptional written and oral communication skills, strategic thinking ability, and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated capacity to collaborate across diverse campus constituencies.

Background in enrollment marketing, brand strategy, media relations, and/or crisis communications.

Experience in crisis and issues communications.

Strong analytical skills with experience using marketing performance metrics and dashboards.

Preferred

Master's degree in a related field, from an accredited institution.

Ten (10)+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in marketing and communications.

Experience working within public higher education systems.

Experience working with unionized employees.

Experience working with and serving diverse populations.
