Overview
Job Description - Assistant Director of External Relations (250000NG) Towson University (TU) has earned distinction as both a top-100 public university and one of the nation's great colleges to work for. Located north of Baltimore, TU currently enrolls over 19,000 students and is the second-largest university in the prestigious University System of Maryland. Towson University fosters a climate that is grounded in respect to cultivate the intellectual and personal growth of the entire university community. The Assistant Director of External Relations plays a central role in supporting student success via employer recruitment, with a focus on: (1) providing competitive opportunities to all TU students; (2) securing participation in the Career Center’s major career fairs each academic year; and (3) generating revenue for the department. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining employer relationships that drive impactful career community sponsorship and strategic student engagement opportunities. The Assistant of External Relations also plays a supporting role in the administration and growth of the Career Center’s Employer Partnership Program. Through data-informed outreach and partner cultivation, this position supports the expansion of career programming and enhances student access to internships, jobs, and employer connections. In collaboration with the Career Education team, faculty, and campus partners, this position contributes to program management, supervises student interns, and advances the Career Center’s employer engagement strategy through purposeful revenue-generating efforts and recruitment. The work hours for this position may include occasional weekends and evenings. Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing. Responsibilities
Responsibilities for the Assistant Director of External Relations include, but are not limited to the following: Serves as the external relations lead for assigned Career Communities, managing a portfolio of employers across industries that align with student interests and academic programs; develops and implements an employer recruitment strategy designed to generate leads, expand TU’s Career Center employer network, and increase participation in impactful programs such as career fairs, on-campus recruiting, and sponsorship opportunities; assists in retaining the existing base of employers through the delivery of excellent customer service and continued follow-up Actively represents the Career Center at on and off-campus employer events, including career panels, networking receptions, advisory meetings, and recruitment visits Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with employers through regular outreach, presentations, and one-on-one engagement with consideration for revenue development throughout the TU footprint; actively converts employer interest into formal engagement through clear communication of engagement benefits, timely follow-up, and strategic alignment with Career Center goals; collaborates with the Associate Director of External Relations and Partnerships to meet revenue benchmarks, grow the Career Center’s employer partnership program, and ensure sponsor benefit delivery Works closely with Assistant Directors of Career Education, faculty, internship coordinators, and other campus stakeholders to connect employers with tailored recruiting opportunities; utilizes Handshake to track outreach activity, manage the employer pipeline, and generate reports that guide strategic recruitment and revenue decisions Collaborates with the Career Education team and assigned Career Communities to support the planning and delivery of employer-facing events and employer recruitment; contributes to the design and execution of signature programming such as career fairs, industry-specific boutique fairs, employer tabling, and direct employer engagement with students Performs other duties as assigned The work hours for this position may include occasional weekends and evenings. Required Qualifications: Two years of experience building and maintaining external relationships with a variety of stakeholders (e.g., employers, community organizations, sponsors, or similar partners) Experience supporting or contributing to revenue generation through partnerships, programming, or events Strong skills in project coordination and event management Excellent written and verbal communication skills Professionalism, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on cross-functional teams Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds Proficiency with common technology platforms and willingness to learn new systems Flexibility, adaptability, and openness to piloting innovative ideas Preferred Qualifications: Relevant experience in admissions, fundraising, corporate recruitment, or employer relations strongly desired Experience representing an organization to external stakeholders through outreach, presentations, or event participation Demonstrated success in meeting revenue goals or managing partnerships in a performance-driven environment Familiarity with higher education, workforce development, or career services Proven ability to collaborate across departments and contribute to shared goals Proficiency with career services or CRM platforms (e.g., Handshake, Salesforce) Salary and Benefits
Targeted hiring range is $65,000 - $68,000 and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
