Overview Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine the Pharmacy Director provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for all pharmacy services within a large, academic teaching hospital. This role oversees medication management across inpatient, outpatient, and specialty areas; ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards; advances clinical practice; and supports the hospital’s mission of patient care, education, and research. The Pharmacy Director collaborates closely with medical, nursing, and administrative leaders to optimize medication safety, quality, and cost-effective care.

Duties

Ensure continued compliance with all Pharmacy-related Laws, Rules and Regulations of all applicable Federal, State and local regulatory agencies. Maintain and coordinate medication-related policies and procedures with all system hospitals.

Ensure fiscal compliance, provide oversight for the Federal 340B program. Audit compliance with rules and regulations imposed by Federal, State and local regulatory agencies governing the practice of Pharmacy, including the DEA, TJC, DOH, OPD, OPA, HRSA and NY State Board of Pharmacy.

Develop and manage the pharmacy budget, including labor, drug spend, and capital planning. Incorporate relevant available local and national benchmarks. Implement cost containment strategies, contracting opportunities, and value-based purchasing. Evaluate and adopt new technologies, automation, and clinical programs that enhance efficiency and quality.

Responsible for coordination among Registered Pharmacies within the hospital system including, but not limited to, drug formulary integration, policy integration, contract integration and shared decision-making.

Responsible for the recruitment and retention of a diverse team of pharmacists, technicians, residents, and support staff. Promote staff engagement. Ensure continued accreditation of the hospital’s Pharmacy Practice Residency Program. Lead system-wide medication safety initiatives. Support the University’s research mission.

Develop and implement a hospital-based specialty and retail pharmacy network.

Qualifications Required Qualifications:

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.

Minimum of five years of progressive pharmacy leadership experience in a hospital or health system setting.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and recognize when an issue requires additional administrative attention.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional clinical or management certifications or degrees preferred.

Prior experience as a Pharmacy Director or Pharmacy Executive preferred.

Health system experience preferred.

Specialty Pharmacy and 340B Contract Pharmacy experience preferred.

Compensation Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range for this position is $196,213 - $239,183 per year. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of experience.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as location pay for UUP full-time positions ($4,000). Total compensation includes generous leave, health plans, and state pension.
