JOB SUMMARY The Highland Local School District is seeking a dedicated and experienced Food Service Director to lead and manage our district-wide school nutrition program. The ideal candidate will be passionate about child nutrition, committed to food quality and safety and capable of administering a high quality, cost-effective and compliant food service operation that supports student health and academic success. SPECIFIC DUTIES Directs the effective delivery and continuous improvement of a district-wide food service program. Utilizes computerized software systems for food and non-food ordering, payroll, student data, menus, nutrient analysis, lunch participation, state and federal reports and all other related food service operations. Collects, prepares and disseminates information and procedures related to nutrition, food production, presentation and efficiency of the program. Recruits, trains and oversees the work of all food service personnel, making necessary recommendations to the Superintendent regarding hiring, promoting and discharging of food service employees. Plans all school menus and ensures school meals meet all USDA child nutrition guidelines. Provides a variety of food choices that appeal to student preferences. Creates and implements pricing for all foods sold in the food service department. Provides for the proper administration of all federal and state regulations. Purchases all food and non-food supplies, taking all steps necessary to secure the highest quality and service at the most economical price. Processes paperwork for direct certifications and applications for free and reduced cost lunches. Maintains confidentiality of privileged information. Coordinates the resources and services of the cafeteria with the principals of the school buildings and with leaders of groups or organizations using the cafeteria for special activities, obtaining supplies and providing personnel for services, as requested and approved by the Superintendent. Supervises and oversees the planning and delivery of food for special school or district-sponsored events and programs, as directed by the Superintendent/Building Principals. Acts as principal sanitarian of the kitchens, establishing necessary rules and regulations, training personnel in the proper handling and storage of food and the maintenance of sanitary facilities and equipment. Ensures compliance with all food preparation regulations such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and oversees kitchen health/safety inspections. Utilizes nutritional software to communicate nutritional information to parents and school nurses for students with special dietary needs such as diabetes and celiac, as well as food allergies and food sensitivities. Works with staff to address the needs of students with dietary restrictions. Completes written evaluations of assigned personnel, as per the negotiated agreement. Maintains accounting procedures in accordance with district standards and state and federal regulations. Approves invoices for payment, creates purchase orders for all food service vendors and uses computerized point-of-sale reports to prepare necessary reports on operations for submission to the Treasurer's Office and state and federal agencies. Oversees the timely submission of reports, records and inventories. Maintains district records for the maximum period mandated by law and/or board policy. Establishes standards for professional development in accordance with state regulations. Arranges for relevant inservice training, including nutrition, food storage and preparation, sanitation and safety and equipment use and care for all assigned personnel. Works in cooperation with the Maintenance Supervisor regarding maintenance repairs, overall cleaning systems and purchase of equipment used in the cafeteria. Completes at least 12 hours of annual continuing education/training. Demonstrates the ability to multi-task in a busy environment. Communicates effectively with students, parents, teachers, district personnel and community members. Prepares Food Service presentations for Board of Education meetings, as requested by the Superintendent. Presents a pleasing and friendly personality. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent. Job Requirements

HIRING STANDARDS FOR NEW SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM DIRECTORS New directors – those hired on or after July 1, 2015 – are subject to the education requirements below. School Nutrition Program Directors are the individuals responsible for the operation of school nutrition programs for all schools under the local educational agency (LEA). MINIMUM EDUCATION STANDARDS Bachelor's degree or equivalent educational experiences, with academic major in specific areas; OR Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and State-recognized certificate for school nutrition directors; OR Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition programs experience; OR Associate’s degree or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in specific areas and at least 2 years of relevant programs experience. ¹Related majors include food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business or related field. ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION STANDARDS *Effective July 1, 2024, updated professional standards allows state agency discretion to approve the hiring of an individual to serve as a school nutrition program director in a medium or large local educational agency, for individuals who have 10 years or more of school nutrition program experience but do not hold a bachelor's or associate's degree. Directors hired under this exception must have a high school diploma or GED. MINIMUM PRIOR TRAINING STANDARDS Person in Charge (PIC) Food Safety Certification should be current or renewed within 30 calendar days of employee's starting date.
