The Senior Director of Finance will lead financial strategy, financial operations, and stewardship across our nonprofit workforce development and urban forestry programs and our landscaping and tree care services social enterprise.

This leadership role ensures strong financial performance, supports mission‑aligned growth, strengthens financial systems, and provides clear, actionable insights to organizational leadership, the Board of Directors, funders, and partners.

Essential Functions:

Financial Strategy & Leadership

  • Lead long‑term financial strategy for nonprofit programs and our landscaping and tree care services social enterprise.
  • Advise the Executive Director and Board on fiscal strategy, risk management, and business model sustainability.
  • Provide financial and operational analysis to guide expansion, cost allocation, pricing, and investment decisions.
  • Utilize BI dashboards and analytics tools for insights on unit economics, program performance, and profitability.
  • Lead implementation of ADP Workforce Now and Sage Intacct (or comparable HCM/ERP systems).

Financial Planning & Budget Management

  • Oversee annual budgeting and multi‑year forecasting processes.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting for leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant cost‑allocation methodologies across all departments.

Accounting, Compliance & Controls

  • Direct accounting operations including general ledger, receivables/payables, payroll, and revenue recognition.
  • Maintain robust internal controls, financial policies, and compliance frameworks.
  • Lead annual external audits and tax filings (Form 990 and associated enterprise filings).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements for nonprofit and UBIT accounting.

Revenue Management & Grants Administration

  • Manage financial components of government workforce development and urban forestry grants, philanthropic funding, fee‑for‑service work, and landscaping and tree care services revenue.
  • Prepare budgets for grant proposals; monitor spending restrictions and reporting requirements.
  • Oversee invoicing, job‑costing, margin analysis, and forecasting for the landscaping and tree care services social enterprise.

Enterprise Finance & Operational Support

  • Partner with enterprise leadership to improve pricing, job costing, forecasting, and profitability analysis.
  • Evaluate capital expenditures for vehicles, equipment, and field operations.
  • Analyze financial implications of new lines of business, partnerships, or expansion opportunities.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead and develop finance and accounting staff to build a strong, service‑oriented finance function.
  • Collaborate with program and enterprise teams to improve financial literacy and budget adherence.
  • Support the Board Finance and Audit committees with reporting, analysis, and strategic guidance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or related field required; MBA or CPA strongly preferred.
  • 8–12+ years of progressive financial leadership, ideally in a nonprofit or mixed nonprofit–commercial environment.
  • Experience managing diverse revenue streams, including grants, philanthropic funding, fee‑for‑service work, and enterprise operations.
  • Experience implementing or upgrading financial, ERP, CRM, or job‑costing systems.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit GAAP, restricted/unrestricted funds, cost allocation, and grants management.
  • Background in service‑based or field‑based industries (e.g., landscaping, tree care) preferred.
  • Proven skills in strategic planning, financial modeling, and organizational forecasting.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate financial information for multiple audiences.
  • Commitment to our mission of workforce development, environmental stewardship, and community impact.
  • Ability to pass criminal background check.

Work Environment

Indoor office environment; occasional visits to outdoor and indoor participant worksites and community locations and events.

Physical demands

Standing or sitting for long periods of time. Significant screen viewing and keyboarding/typing time, repetitive movement of hands and fingers. Constantly required to communicate with ability to talk and hear.

This role offers:

  • Pay range: $100,500 - $122,000 depending upon experience.
